how does one request a file containing accented characters from a bot running omenserve? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sour_creme · 2019-12-14 10:29 let's say the bot is joe, the file i want is "abcdé.txt" when i type !joe abcdé.txt i get request denied. doesn't matter if it's joe bot, or any other bot with the same file, or similar files with any type of foreign accented character, i can't obtain it. yet they have the file listed on their lists. i tried changing the keyboard language to non english, no luck. tried different irc clients, no luck. it must be omenserve?? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 007ace · 2019-12-15 08:47 Are you able to get other files with standard characters? I know I don't even have to type on the full filename when !get files. Is there a /msg option for your files? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2019-12-15 09:28 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sour_creme · 2019-12-15 09:29 yes, i can get other files as long as they are 0-9, a-z and the other standard ascii characters like . - _ i'm using nettalk and hexchat. i also found this thread, https://forums.mirc.com/ubbthreads.php/topic s/246030/Re:_Mirc/Omenserve_and_German_ but as i don'thave mirc i can't try it. however,i'm trying to figure out how to send a raw msg to a user channel. if you want, i can pm the what i tried if you want to try it on undernet ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nei-- · 2019-12-15 18:05 you may need to change your outgoing charset to Latin-1 or similar instead of Unicode ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 007ace · 2019-12-17 03:50 Which version of hexchat are you using? I see there have been issues with filenames in the past. Maybe it is the drive you are saving it to? What is the specific error? I'm trying to rule things out but I'm not getting a lot of specific information. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sour_creme · 2019-12-17 03:56 hexchat version 2.14.2 for windows 7 x64; this was downloaded two days ago, i'm not using windows 10 app because the link from the hexchat website sends me to the microsoft app store which wants me to pay money to download and install their app. i think what i'm going to have to figure out is how to send latin-1 charset from either windows 10, or from the irc client, instead of default utf-8 unicode, i think that maybe the problem. the two irc clients don't have any option for me that I can see on how to send messages in a different charset, and windows 10 don't have that option.i just have to try and find a free app that can do this. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Equinoxdawg · 2019-12-17 06:04 > the microsoft app store which wants me to pay money to download and install their app. This is a really common misconception due to the poor design choices of the Windows Store. [It's free and you're not alone misunderstanding the clusterfuck of an interface](https://www.reddit.com/r/irc/comments /e2mc49/is_hexchat_free/f8wbhk5/) the WS has. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 007ace · 2019-12-17 18:33 I don't want to steer you away from hexchat, but if you try another IRC program and the problem isn't there, you can confirm it isn't an issue with your computer and is specific to hexchat. Then we can really narrow things down. I recommend using the version of hexchat designed for Windows 10 from their app store, click 'try now'. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sour_creme · 2019-12-18 10:31 ok, i downloaded hexchat for win 10. i found the place where you can modify the character set to use. that's located in Network List > Edit. so I changed the setting from UTF-8 to ISO 8859-15, logged in to the irc server and looks like everything works now. the irc server now sends the correct characters to the bot; with the bot replying back with the files. thanks everybody for sticking around to help. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sour_creme · 2019-12-18 10:31 thanks, it looks liek that was the issue. thanks again ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 007ace · 2019-12-18 15:13 Awesome, glad it worked out for you. Hopefully anyone else who has a similar problem finds this post. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Rowaan · 2020-01-21 18:29 I realize this was a while ago, but if you run across files like these, send the "bot" a message. A human is almost always behind that bot, especially if they are ebook channels. If they aren't assholes, they'll fix the accent, remake their list, where you can then grab the renamed file (sans the accent).
