Whats The "Secure" Way To Setup ZNC Bouncer? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Z3ROGRAV1TYx · 2019-12-01 15:10 What's the "Secure" way to setup ZNC when doing so on your local network? Reverse proxy? Is that all that's needed? I'm still a bit new to selfhosting stuff. I just want to ensure I'm not opening any major security issues. I'd probably want to stay connected to it outside of the house, so I'd assume thats where the reverse proxy would come in. Now what if I wanted to split tunnel with openvpn to mask IP when logging into servers? Is this an absolute PITA to do? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Saber_UK · 2019-12-01 17:40 Use a strong password and TLS. Doing anything else is overcomplicating it for no benefit. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- eskimo_dev · 2019-12-01 23:14 Just throw it up on an aws free tier instance if you're worried about people potentially getting into your home network. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ProgVal · 2019-12-02 01:30 > I just want to ensure I'm not opening any major security issues. There are more security issues in running a web browser (which is a huge piece of software) than running ZNC. Don't worry too much about it, just use a good password to prevent unauthorized access to it. > Now what if I wanted to split tunnel with openvpn to mask IP when logging into servers? Depends on your OS. On Linux, you can use: `ip route add via dev `. But if you're not comfortable with this kind of configuration, it's probably best not to rely on it to hide your IP address. Use network cloaks instead. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2019-12-02 05:06 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Z3ROGRAV1TYx · 2019-12-02 17:38 Would you reccomend ProgVal's suggestion for IP masking? Or is there a better way to do it? Only link from me being directly to the VPS. Just any IRC connections are being made through ZNC which is on the VPS, so I would proxy ZNC through a vpn. Correct? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- IBNash · 2019-12-21 02:35 You could setup ZNC on a free VM in Google's Free Tier if location doesn't matter to you. Setup routes as suggested by /u/ProgVal Expose it on via TLS, I have mine setup behind a Caddy reverse proxy. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Gelgisen · 2020-01-02 09:25 How do i do that share? I am aware of the free year, but how can i set up znc there? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- eskimo_dev · 2020-01-02 14:15 Setting up the aws on Ubuntu and following these 5 or so commands in this section will probably be the quickest/easiest way https://wiki.znc.in/Installation#Install_via_PPA ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Gelgisen · 2020-01-02 22:17 https://youtu.be/KuttMs3K2_w Would this tutorial work? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- eskimo_dev · 2020-01-02 22:22 Just read what I posted and follow the simple steps... you don't need a video.... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Gelgisen · 2020-01-02 23:02 Alright.
