i just tried the demo for Convos and honestly i like thelounge more. i
don't think shout is under development anymore, thelounge is a fork of
shout that's regularly updated.

They should really make a package instead of have a hacky one-off

Both clients have available demos online, so you can try them out
yourself and see which you like the most. Seems to be about personal
taste, since users have been moving between the two apps.

The script does a whole lot more than just downloading Convos, so I’m
not sure how it would translate into a package.

Sure a script is still needed, but Convos itself should be a package,
you know for obvious things like being able to sanely update.

i prefer the interface, i haven't really digged deep into convo's
settings though
