Irssi: Unknown command: server irc.freenode.net reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AkThao · 2019-09-25 14:45 Hi, I've just gotten started with IRC and I'm trying to get the hang of using Irssi. In the status window, if I type `/connect` [`irc.freenode.net`](https://irc.freenode.net), I successfully connect then can join chats and so on. However, if I type `/server` [`irc.freenode.net`](https://irc.freenode.net) then I get the error: `Irssi: Unknown command: server` [`irc.freenode.net`](https://irc.freenode.net) This happens whether or not I'm already connected to another network. Any ideas on why this is happening? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- eskimo_dev · 2019-09-25 14:46 Well. First things first, it's chat.freenode.net ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AkThao · 2019-09-25 14:56 Are they not two different servers? Even then, if I use [chat.freenode.net](https://chat.freenode.net), the exact same thing happens. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- eskimo_dev · 2019-09-25 14:57 [chat.freenode.net](https://chat.freenode.net) will rotate through all their available servers, even if [irc.freenode.net](https://irc.freenode.net) works not sure if it does the same ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AltReality · 2019-09-25 15:44 looks like the /server command needs another argument like 'connect' ... [https://irssi.org/documentation/help/server/](https://irssi.org/docum entation/help/server/) Try /server connect [chat.freenode.net](https://chat.freenode.net) lol in fact that exact command is in the examples :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AkThao · 2019-09-25 15:53 That works perfectly, thank you! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Saber_UK · 2019-09-25 15:53 irc.freenode.net is an alias for chat.freenode.net. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AkThao · 2019-09-25 17:00 Thanks for the info! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- trekkie1701c · 2019-09-26 00:12 It does. I have a ZNC some servers don't like and it'll be rotated through the servers til it finds one that'll let it connect. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- eskimo_dev · 2019-09-26 01:47 How many reddit accounts do you have that you downvote everything I say with? It's funny how even my helpful comments always get downvoted. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2019-09-26 07:29 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Saber_UK · 2019-09-26 08:11 I didn't even notice it was you I was replying to lmao. Calm your persecution complex. If you don't want to get downvoted then don't give incorrect advice? ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- eskimo_dev · 2019-09-26 09:45 Look at freenode.net and scroll down. The specifically say chat.freenode.net. Why use an alias that may go missing o.O ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Hintswen · 2019-10-09 09:20 irc.network.TLD seems like a pretty common uri scheme, why would freenode ever remove the alias?
