Implementing anycast for irc.gotham.chat reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Lucaszecat · 2019-08-29 17:22 Hello, we are a growing network and it is time for us to implement a routing by region solution. We are thinking anycast ? What are your thoughts ? What is the best way to implement it ? Any useful links ? Please advise. Thank you. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LtSmegma · 2019-08-29 19:17 To be honest that is a bit over kill. Try looking at a DNS provider that provides Geo and have a "pool" A record. I believe NS1 and Route53 do that. `19:13 -!- There are 20 users and 318 invisible on 23 servers` `19:13 -!- 45 operator(s) online` `19:13 -!- 57 channels formed` `19:13 -!- I have 50 clients and 2 servers` `19:13 -!- 50 69 Current local users 50, max 69` `19:13 -!- 338 342 Current global users 338, max 342` For a max of 342 users... One server would be enough. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Lucaszecat · 2019-08-29 19:48 What about cloudns ? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- corobo · 2019-08-29 20:16 Yes! I've had this one saved in my RSS reader for years now, just in case it ever comes up. Disclaimer it's from 2016 I don't know if the information is still current, but it's a decent starter. https://www.samir.ca/2016/12/11/build-your-own-anycast-network- in-9-steps.html As the other comment mentions though it may be way waaaaay easier to use a GeoIP DNS method using something like Amazon's Route53 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- prawnsalad · 2019-08-29 23:11 IRC over anycast just wouldn't be stable. Unless you mean anycast DNS? Then this is easily doable via most of the larger DNS hosts. \> There are 20 users and 318 invisible on 23 servers But this... it's really not worth it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Lucaszecat · 2019-08-29 23:13 Ok i guess ur right. Thank you for the feedback ! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- defect · 2019-08-30 04:16 This is good advice IMO. Do get a couple of servers on different places in the world with DNS being the source of truth based on geo. My (non-IRC) experience with global anycast has been it's hard to control. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- IBNash · 2019-11-13 06:23 [https://www.samir.ca/2016/12/11/build-your-own-anycast-network- in-9-steps.html](https://www.samir.ca/2016/12/11/build-your-own- anycast-network-in-9-steps.html)
