what the fuck happened to hex chat reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- manliestdudealive · 2019-07-02 06:33 why am I directed to the microsoft store? Is there any easy 1 click download IRC client or do I have to deal with bullshit from now on ---------------------------------------------------------------------- doaks-ltm · 2019-07-02 06:58 Should be able to install fine using the Win7+ installer linked here? [https://hexchat.github.io/downloads.html](https://hexchat.github.io/d ownloads.html) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ChivoTWD · 2019-07-02 07:03 "1 click download" kinda >is< the bullshit from now on..... Quote from Wikipedia: "The main body of XChat code is licensed under the [GNU General Public License](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNU_General_Public_License). However, on August 23, 2004, the official build for [Windows](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Windows) had become [shareware](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shareware), and had to be purchased after a 30-day trial period. Previous builds for Windows were removed from the official site.[\[15\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XChat#cite_note- Preston-15) The authors stated that the shareware fee is required due to the excessive amount of time it took to make it compile under Windows" Also: [https://hexchat.github.io/shareware.html](https://hexchat.github.io/s hareware.html) It would appear the "Windows 10 app" is $9.99 shareware....however the other "Windows 7" builds appear to be from the [https://hexchat.github.io](https://hexchat.github.io/downloads.html) site and probably are the "unofficial builds" mentioned which might not require register/paying. I am not sure, I use Hexchat for Linux. If I recall correctly, KVirc is reasonably decent and free for use in Windows. Other than those....your free options are pretty limited. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- manliestdudealive · 2019-07-02 07:18 I generally use Linux but I have to use Windows for work. Thanks for the information. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 231723175 · 2019-07-02 08:39 there's a thousand download links to hexchat on the internet that are free. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- A-UNDERSCORE-D · 2019-07-02 12:48 The Windows 7 builds are as official as the windows 10 ones. They're the exact same codebase. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cykros · 2019-07-04 06:32 If you're not strapped to the gui, you can run a variety of \*nix irc clients, including irssi weechat, and BitchX using cygwin on Windows. Though honestly if you're going that far you almost may as well run irc on a \*nix server you have ssh access to in either screen or tmux to connect and reconnect from whatever you're on. OpenWRT and DD-WRT both supported this sort of functionality so as to allow you to do this on your router. It can be handy to have uninterrupted access to channels for maintaining scrollback, and one client to worry about remembering how to use is less than 2 or more. On the other hand, yea, options are limited in gui land for FOSS irc clients. Pidgin I suppose counts as an option...but lol have fun. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2019-07-21 04:33 [removed] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2019-07-21 05:07 [removed]
