How to have the most possible security/anonymity on IRC without a vpn? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- supersitos · 2019-05-07 22:19 I heard about SSL but have no clue what it is, any other methods are appreciated C: ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LtSmegma · 2019-05-07 22:40 SSL, OTR or FiSH SSL is used to connect your client to the server kinda like how you connect to a website with SSL. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- supersitos · 2019-05-08 00:12 I dont know anything about those C; can you explain? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dorisfrench · 2019-05-08 05:56 Irccloud.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------- A-UNDERSCORE-D · 2019-05-08 07:49 SSL (or TLS, they're related but I'm not going to get into that) is simply encryption between you and the server, in exactly the same way a `https://` link is encrypted between you and the website you're using. For anonymity, you will struggle without a VPN on networks that show your IP, as without a VPN you cannot change it (non-static home IPs notwithstanding). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cusco · 2019-05-08 08:06 There is no anonymity anywhere. If you connect to the server directly, be it by ssl or not, ipv6 or not, the server has your ip - even if it masks it to other users. If you connect via a vpn or a proxy, that provider will have your ip ---------------------------------------------------------------------- OMGItsCheezWTF · 2019-05-08 12:31 If you want privacy and anonymity, use a different service like telegram or signal. IRC was designed to be completely transparent and open for everyone to see everything. It was designed in a different time to today when privacy wasn't so much of a concern. Sure you can use TLS encryption between you and some servers, but the server still sees what you send in plain text, and sends it to other users in plain text unless they use TLS too. Essentially all that TLS is good for is verifying you are connecting to the IRC server you think you are, and even then many use self signed certificates so you can't even do that much! Sure some networks use IP masking, but the server (and any ircops with the right permissions) can still see your real IP, and if you want to use file sharing, your client has to disclose your real IP too. Sure you can use a VPN, but all of the other things still apply. Sure you could use a third party encryption algorithm on top of your plain text, with some other means of exchanging keys. But then, why use IRC when there are other systems designed to do what you're trying to do (encrypt conversations end to end) At the end of the day, IRC is not a private connection, nor was it ever designed to be one. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- supersitos · 2019-05-08 14:36 Just a client?
