Hacked through IRC reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- wc3betterthansc2 · 2019-04-23 23:47 I went to a certain channel on a certain server (not gonna tell which for obvious reasons), after a couple of minutes the admins/moderators started commenting on my OS, processor and processes that were running. How is that possible? I didn't know admins/moderator had information on a user's PC. Is there a way to securely use IRC? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ktllo · 2019-04-23 23:51 I suspect they used CTCP-Version to ask your irc client for such information. You should see the manual of your irc client how to set a different response for ctcp request. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- m1ss1ontomars2k4 · 2019-04-24 01:20 "Hacked" is a pretty strong word. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cusco · 2019-04-24 08:55 I had some sets on irssi that would send the funniest replies to finger, version, etc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- wc3betterthansc2 · 2019-04-24 11:26 pretty sure accessing a computer's personal information is considered hacking ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gatewayy · 2019-04-24 12:47 Could you send me you list? :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gatewayy · 2019-04-24 12:49 Your client probably sent the info from one or more CTCP queries. You should go through your client settings and disable settings related to CTCP. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Astronaut-Bread · 2019-04-24 16:02 I'm not so sure. If it's related to CTCP, they're asking your client for information and it's giving it to them as designed. Not necessarily hacking (or more accurately, cracking). By your logic, if you give a homeless man $5 on the street after he asks you for it, he just robbed you. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cusco · 2019-04-24 18:20 I no longer have it. I remember some like "VERSION Your Mother 6.9" and "mIRC16 windows 3.1" I also remember "eXtreme" mIRC script by Kall, had a big list of funny aggressive messages used for replies and kicks... You should check those ---------------------------------------------------------------------- m1ss1ontomars2k4 · 2019-04-24 19:26 Not when your computer is advertising ito the world. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gatewayy · 2019-04-24 22:27 Yeah, I’ve had that happen to myself. It’s part of being on irc. :)
