Hi. Do people really IRC anymore? I remember back in the 90's.. reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- scribblepoet · 2019-04-21 21:43 Just wondering. Every irc server I've visited in the last 16 years had a long list of bots and non existent chatters. Just mostly saying hi though. Checking out your sub. 🎩 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- KindOne · 2019-04-21 21:44 IRC is still alive and kicking. I'm using it right now. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 101-KvSR · 2019-04-21 21:58 As active as ever. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thenapdragon · 2019-04-21 22:00 still using it daily! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- prawnsalad · 2019-04-21 22:02 Using it for work and social groups these days. Lesser used than it was but it's still there. And increasing again IMO. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- scribblepoet · 2019-04-21 22:03 Ok. I gave you a point for the reply. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- scribblepoet · 2019-04-21 22:05 I gave you a point, but honestly "as active as ever" makes me feel totally skeptical lol. Maybe someone revived it or something, but it sure seemed lifeless to me for a long time. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- scribblepoet · 2019-04-21 22:06 I could see how it might come back, yeah. Makes sense. 🎩 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- scribblepoet · 2019-04-21 22:06 Ok ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LtWorf_ · 2019-04-21 22:08 Many open source projects are active on IRC. More generic communities are kinda fading. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 101-KvSR · 2019-04-21 22:09 Freenode, Rizon and a few invite only servers are incredibly active. Even Totse is still active and a few old revived BBS boards. I wasn’t around IRC in ‘03 but AIM is dead and never coming back. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- scribblepoet · 2019-04-21 22:11 Cool. So what type if channel names tend to be active? And which type of example channels are gone.. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- scribblepoet · 2019-04-21 22:17 Cool. I was on irc way before 2003 and irc was mostly a hook up function. Then by around 2004 craigslist already was rolling and a lot of hook ups happened in the craigslist personals. I participated in that for a while. Then commercial interests created big dating web sites and that's when a lot went wrong because it felt like the idea was to "keep people on the site, paying monthly fees" so the real dating and hookups was not "good for the site" which is why i feel people have so much trouble with those. Nobody minds paying but you just got to figure its all about keeping you as a subscriber for the rest of your life lol. For the money. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 101-KvSR · 2019-04-21 22:19 DateHookup got closed and sold, but the forums moved to the BBS style Totse revival. I don’t know anyone who uses IRC as a hookup platform, especially with forums, social media and that silly e dating platform ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Zowlyfon · 2019-04-21 22:19 IRC still has very strong communities, of all sizes. It's lost some comminties to other platforms but it's definetly still got some very active places. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- scribblepoet · 2019-04-21 22:33 Images became first order of business at one point. Irc hookups involved sending images privately to just one person after getting some idea you might like each other. There were a lot of hook ups on irc in the 90s. That's a big part of what irc used to be about. But the way mobile and the internet work these days, irc wouldn't make much sense for hook ups. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 101-KvSR · 2019-04-21 22:37 IRC hookups sounds like the epitome of danger zone to me. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- scribblepoet · 2019-04-21 22:38 Cool. It used to have thousands of channels all active back in the day. Last time I tried it was probably like 2012, and it was already looking empty. I haven't been on it probably since then ---------------------------------------------------------------------- scribblepoet · 2019-04-21 22:56 lol. naw. they were mostly good. some were sketchy but everything has that. it's better than dicking your clients receptionist while he's away at lunch.. if something goes wrong with that she loses her job and you lose your client. 🎩 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- damonnz · 2019-04-22 01:45 Run my news & stock trading service in IRC...still a great real-time platform imho & without all the social media BS clutter... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2019-04-22 01:45 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- scribblepoet · 2019-04-22 01:51 Yeah. I hate facebook. And a bunch of other internet sites. 🎩 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ubuwalker31 · 2019-04-22 02:40 Snoonet has lots of active channels that are reddit focused. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- masta · 2019-04-22 03:05 IRC will never go away, it's seen some massive chat networks come and go. JUST GOING TO LEAVE THIS HERE: https://xkcd.com/1782/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- scribblepoet · 2019-04-22 03:46 I'm not sure how that is but being seeing as how a bunch of people here keep replying with this same message I'll just have to take you folks word. I'll check out the link you posted (with a lot of skepticism till I see it for myself lol) . 🎩 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LtWorf_ · 2019-04-22 06:48 Debian channels on oftc are active. I also have a small channel for my slack-irc gateway project, called #localslackirc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ChickenOfDoom · 2019-04-22 08:47 Yeah I use IRC every day ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lazyfingersy · 2019-04-22 11:01 Aye mate, you should connect to [irc.freenode.net](https://irc.freenode.net) , [irc.udernet.org](https://irc.udernet.org) , [irc.anonops.com](https://irc.anonops.com) , there's lot's of people chatting and to help. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- scribblepoet · 2019-04-22 12:01 Ok. Thanks. Fyi freenode was one of the servers i had checked in on about five years ago and compared with old irc from the 90's...it looked like a cemetary. Undernet too.... Undernet was hugely popular in the 90s and then evaporated. But that was five years back. Maybe something has changed. There's a new cycle of internet people 25 years later and nostalgia definitely happens. 🎩 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- scribblepoet · 2019-04-22 12:04 By the way, what's the best android irc app these days? For LG.. 🎩 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BBloggsbott · 2019-04-22 13:37 I was gonna post that!!! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sugrb · 2019-04-22 18:41 I use it everyday! I do miss the mid-90s on efnet! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- scribblepoet · 2019-04-22 18:49 Oh yeah lol. Efnet was the main one. Then they started adding features and created other networks using the new irc server software. Now anybody with a decent phone can download a server app and put their own irc server online. 🎩 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- emperorhelmut · 2019-04-22 21:33 No. Everybody migrated to myspace. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- scribblepoet · 2019-04-22 22:00 lol. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2019-04-25 01:23 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rootc0re · 2019-04-27 11:45 I do, I used mostly irc.quarterdeck.com They ran a modified ircd basically. Q-Bot handled a lot of the Z lines and bans. There was a guy named boomc0re or b00m or something like that that had a buddy that worked for an ISP that made it so when you would /who him the DNS assigned to his IP was irc.quarterdeck.com I believe he was the main OP in #teenchat Other nicknames I remember we're Skye, Chicken, raz0rcore, maddog, rev, sk8rdude, quadcdromenforcer, that's all that is coming to mind at the moment. As for other channel names I cant remember them off the top of my head. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- pat-e · 2019-04-29 13:44 Even if it sounds stupid: There is a very heavy daily used IRC-Server, that connects multiple users daily and also is very heavily chatted in... Twitch.tv Chat ... the backend is IRC and you can even connect to the Twitch.tv chat using your own IRC-client :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- scribblepoet · 2019-04-29 14:04 Interesting. Thanks. 🎩 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ortizjonatan · 2019-04-30 01:43 I'll just leave this here: https://tilde.chat ---------------------------------------------------------------------- scribblepoet · 2019-04-30 01:44 Cool. Thanks ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Modal_Window · 2019-05-05 16:39 AndroIRC is pretty good. A bunch use IRCCloud too. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- YachtRock_SoSmooth · 2019-10-07 11:28 Yea me too, had a really great channel I used to be on daily, was a great group lot of fun chats. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- YachtRock_SoSmooth · 2019-10-07 11:28 What's this news service? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- damonnz · 2019-10-08 08:41 It’s #newsroom on Rizon or #iNewsroom on FinancialChat or at inewsroom.net ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Spiritualdude1111 · 2023-08-04 15:08 I get on one every now and then. Twitch chat is pretty much an irc chat. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Spiritualdude1111 · 2023-08-04 15:09 I get on one every now and then. Kick & Twitch chats are pretty much an IRCs but I use Hexchat here and there.
