Thoughts on an open source IRC indexer. reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- y2kbadbug · 2019-02-09 23:32 So, I'm not trying to spam, and as such, I won't actually name my project. However, I have a project that is actually 13 years old and currently being rewritten. I'm the sole contributor to it and all of my source code is private. I was actually considering opening the project as a community project, something people can commit and contribute to, with PRs, etc. The whole point is to create an open IRC indexer, something built as a community. I don't ever plan on putting advertisements on the website, and I never plan on trying to profit from it either. I can pay for the hosting just fine with my own financing. What do you guys think? Ever since SearchIRC died there really hasn't been anything good. Main features considered for the site so far: * Open network/channel registration (with requirements that must be met and verified by precheck bots) * An actual micro social network which allows people to have profiles, link themselves to channels and networks and other users. This also gives net/chan admins access to their pages. * Network pages to display news, statistics, channels, live chat, etc * Channel pages to display news, statistics, users, live chat, logs (would require a bot in their channel for some features). * Global network statistics on separate pages. * There are custom written bots that will handle the crawling of networks. * Forum and Wiki. The site is written in Django/Python/MySQL with the Bootstrap 4 framework, but planning on moving to PostgreSQL for the database. There really is a lot of stuff planned, but these are the huge ideas. This site is nothing but a hobby of mine, and I believe IRC is still strong and alive and want to help raise awareness of it. tl;dr: Just read the damn post. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tobsn · 2019-02-10 00:38 pretty much dead in comparison to telegram (international) growth and discord. I think the whole concept of having a backlog is getting everyone out of IRC. BUT minimize the footprint of the cost and have it run and see what happens... who knows... LPs came back too. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- y2kbadbug · 2019-02-10 00:40 For a business standpoint, I actually prefer Slack for integrations and stuff. However, IRC is still pretty strong as a hobbiest and community platform. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tobsn · 2019-02-10 00:44 slack sucks dick... hardcore. (trust me, on it since it exists for 2 companies, it’s overpriced horseshit with in-app purchases that give boners to managers pretending they “integrated” something with 2 clicks that then annoys everyone else for the next 12 month... sorry, I really do hate it lol. set up a discord server, imagine you have to set it up for a business. you could probably make money setting up discord servers for companies... telegram isn’t really isolated but in terms of bots it’s amazing. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Drooliog · 2019-02-10 03:22 Do it. It sounds like a lot of work, and you might definitely want to put it on github for others to contribute. As much as I like Discord, I think there's room for open, non-proprietary stuff to keep going as long as possible. I still use mIRC, heck I even run an eggdrop bot. The more tools/sites that prolong IRCs life the better. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Saber_UK · 2019-02-10 09:37 If its not opt-in you'll find that your crawling bots will get banned very quickly. If it is opt-in you'll have trouble convincing people to go to the effort of actually setting it up. SearchIRC died for a reason. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- y2kbadbug · 2019-02-10 10:53 It is opt in. And the only effort is a form and an email validation. I ran the site before and didn't have any issues like that. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- prawnsalad · 2019-02-10 19:59 SearchIRC died because Mibbit bought it, deleted the website, and merged its data within it's own shitty channel search.
