Setting irc server to chat locally

Hi everyone, can I make a local irc server for users on one
workstation can chat through each other? I can't seem to see any
answers on google(maybe im just a bit lazy). If you do know please
link me up

Is there a specific reason to use irc or are you ok with alternatives?
Setting Pidgin would be relatively easier

Yes you can setup an irc server locally. There are various servers
already available. I had used ircd-irc2 available in Ubuntu repository
(also another server I don’t remember the name of). But there should
more out there some of which you may need to compile in your own.

how will the users chat if there is only a single workstation?

Thank you for this suggestion but I think I would go to another
