My old (geek/nerd)y school pals & I still prefer IRC over Slack, Discord, etc. reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- antdude · 2019-01-30 19:52 What about the rest of you? We don't like the fancy bloatness, slowness, graphics, etc. Some of still use text mode in our shell accounts like with BitchX clients. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- programmerben · 2019-01-30 19:59 Weird attempt at gatekeeping, Are you expecting a ribbon for this post or something? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Borginjo · 2019-01-30 20:07 Irssi ftw ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2019-01-30 21:31 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SqualorTrawler · 2019-01-30 21:58 I don't hate Discord. I think the ability to embed images and videos and the like is excellent and I wish there was an IRC extension which allowed that (is there - like something a GUI client could interpret?), but Discord has several problems: * I am starting a server on an obscure subject. I will probably have 10 active users. Let me make at least 30 channels covering every possible sub-category of discussion so that a single ongoing conversation can't happen in an orderly fashion and a community is difficult to build. * What happens if Discord goes out of business? IRC works, is open, has a long legacy, but lacks a few modern features. I like it better too. Discord was better than I expected and at least some of my complaints like above with the channels could be fixed with a little human thought. On the other hand, the amount of scripts, bots, workarounds, and so on that are available for IRC are staggering. I still don't like the fact that a lot of IRC networks expose the IP address of clients by default. I have heard arguments excusing this or making it seem like it isn't a big deal, but to me it is like sharing anything else on the Internet: I'd rather have the choice to share affirmatively. Cloaks provided by services should not be necessary (though I am happy they are available.) As for console clients, I still like weechat the best. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SqualorTrawler · 2019-01-30 22:00 This post has nothing to do with gatekeeping at all. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- larolddavid · 2019-01-31 00:46 Every now and then I think about getting back into irc, but I never know where you go to find conversation on topics I'm interested in. I also have that problem with discord however... Maybe I'm just bad at conversation. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mindlesstux · 2019-01-31 01:50 To bridge the gap on the client, I just discovered "the lounge". ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ahandle · 2019-01-31 02:46 A good IRC client can handle embedded images ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ahandle · 2019-01-31 02:47 *"wEiRd aTteMpt aT gAteKeEpIng"* ---------------------------------------------------------------------- byebyebyecycle · 2019-01-31 11:03 I don't think this person knows what gatekeeping is ---------------------------------------------------------------------- unixwizzard · 2019-01-31 19:13 just give me plain old ircII and I'm happy ofc I've been doing irc since pretty much the beginning.. plus a co- worker was one of the ircII developers so I grew used to that client. never could get into any of the other cli or gooey clients ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Plasma_eel · 2019-01-31 19:40 I like when Discord channels are bridged to irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- trobotham · 2019-02-03 19:55 IRC is far superior to Discord, Slack, etc IMO if not for anything else then for being completely open and self-hosted, Slack and Discord are great if you like to be centralized. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- paffeu · 2019-02-09 23:11 Same. I use Weechat (see: [weechat.org](https://weechat.org)) as my IRC client of choice. It runs on my Debian Stretch based KVM VPS. I am still forced to use Slack at work, though. I don't like bloatness of modern IMs. It's just a waste of system resources and space on the screen. Recently I was visiting my family and they still use 5Mb/s ADSL connection. Slack was really slow on it and consumed a lot of precious network resources. I haven't got any issues with IRC on my shell, though. I used SSH/Mosh ([mosh.mit.edu](https://mosh.mit.edu)) connection without any problems :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LtWorf_ · 2019-02-11 20:13 I wrote a thing called `localslackirc` that is basically a local gateway to slack, so my IRC client shields me from all the animated gifs and all the crap that goes on there. https://github.com/ltworf/localslackirc it's in debian, and will be in the upcoming ubuntu i presume. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- silverandporcelain · 2019-02-12 19:26 Here's my opinion from the perspective of someone who didn't know about IRC until recently: I randomly happened upon IRC a little while ago while researching where best to download ebooks (found a guide how to download ebooks w/ IRC and it works like a charm). Before that I've never even heard of it. I've been poking around on IRC for a bit now but I find it very difficult to get into and understand. It's so cluttered and unclear. 99% percent of the time I have no clue what I'm doing or why. Discord on the other hand, which I've been using for a couple of years now, was very easy to get into. Discord does everything I want, does it smoothly and everyone knows discord. And by the time discord goes out of business we will have moved on to the next thing, so I don't really care that irc is 'open' (idek what that means so uh) I'm sure if I asked irl friends about IRC I'd get blank faces. So yeah, I prefer discord. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lanbird · 2019-02-22 20:10 Disconnected from server OOPS: child died
