Why doesn't IRC work over cellular data? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2018-12-17 20:13 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- yunocchi · 2018-12-17 20:14 IRC works on most major carriers while using cellular data, but keep in mind that some networks restrict shared or public IPs due to abuse. Which network are you having issues connecting to? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 7yearlurkernowposter · 2018-12-17 20:41 Which carrier are you using so we can avoid them? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bhertzman · 2018-12-17 21:15 Verizon ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bhertzman · 2018-12-17 21:15 freenode ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bhertzman · 2018-12-17 21:16 It isn't for me. If it helps, I use Verizon and I am trying to connect to freenode. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2018-12-17 21:27 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CheezyXenomorph · 2018-12-17 21:27 Some networks block port 6667 for abuse reasons (which makes no sense but nevermind), try using one of freenodes other ports. Freenode supports ports 6665-6667 and 8000-8002 for plain-text connections, or ports 6697, 7000 and 7070 for SSL-encrypted connections ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bhertzman · 2018-12-17 21:31 Never mind. It was just the client. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2018-12-17 21:36 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bhertzman · 2018-12-17 21:41 Mutter, actually. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bhertzman · 2018-12-17 22:14 I always use 6697 on freenode. I think it was the client I was using. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- clon3man · 2018-12-17 22:18 what happens is, cell data typically shares 1 IP for thousands of customers, if it even 1 person sends spam or has a trojan etc. they get on a blacklist and banned on the IRC network. Most people end up using IRCloud or ZNC for this reason ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bhertzman · 2018-12-17 22:27 That is likely why it was working for me on IRCloud ---------------------------------------------------------------------- EvolverOcelot · 2018-12-18 04:12 My verizon modem changes its IP every 2-5 minutes some days. It should be illegal, but it's what we're stuck with for now. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DEADB33F · 2018-12-18 15:12 A BNC is the best solution. Gets around any port or IP blocking issues and stops you spamming the channel with disconnects/reconnects every time you lose signal for a few secs.
