I idle in a channel with a bot that always pastes two links, one to a
web page, and one is a download link. The second link always contains
the word "download" while the first link never does. I never want to
click the download link. Can I make HexChat automatically hide all
links containing "download" ?

Hexchat is extendable. If you program in python, c, etc, you can hide
those links. Check out their programming language support for plugins.
