New Linux IRC server (A project in the works!) reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thisadamis · 2018-10-30 01:59 Hello everybody my name is Adam and I am sorta new to the linux community and open source software. If this is not the right sub to post this in please forgive me and mods feel free to remove. I am currently working on getting my linux + certification so I can get my foot in the door at the company I work for. I am also a very proud member of the [linuxacademy.com](https://linuxacademy.com) community. Anyways I am a lover of IRC and I have created a IRC server with the hopes of getting some people to help me start a "active" community for new people to linux. (I know, I know IRC is a dying thing) I love it and I think there are alot of people out there that still love it too. Right now I am running an unrealIRCD version 4.2.0 instance on a Debian 7 VPS box. I am also running anope services. Is this something that might interest you? Right now I have the very basics configured for it. I am hoping if I can get a few people willing to help out then we can build it together. :) The IRC server is [letschatlinux.com](https://letschatlinux.com) port 6667. If you are interested in helping out with this just hit me up here or login to the IRC server. I am griphook on there. :) Hope to see some of you! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ddkh · 2018-10-30 02:09 Irc is nowhere near dying . My server is literally dead as I have been trying to figure out ipv6. Also running unreal. With anope. Not too new to linux but have to remember how to do stuff. Lol. I basically setup a private server to hopefully get fellow Patriots in communication. Away from fascistbook and mewe type apps. Just the lack of quality apps that we can distribute to connect privately. For the n00bs. Still prefer the older non existent apps to the new ones. Good luck on your Endeavours. I might check it out. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thisadamis · 2018-10-30 02:11 ahhhh well i haven't turned ipv6 on yet either. Actually my vps doesn't give me ipv6 addresses... Thanks for the good wishes. You are welcome anytime. :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- brokenskill · 2018-10-30 03:29 Not sure if you are aware or not but there are some pretty big Linux/OSS IRC servers out there already that have thousands of people on them. Not trying to knock you or anything. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rubinlinux · 2018-10-30 04:02 Running an IRC network is a big complicated thing not to be taken lightly. Better that you should find an existing network and channel that already meets your needs, or start a new channel on an existing network. Otherwise, you will be overwhelmed eventually with moderation, or worse, be lax about it and your network will be nothing but malware bots communicating home and toxic people using your service to coordinate being awful to others. There is a BIG responsibility to hosting an anonymous public internet service. Please don't take doing so casually. Anyway linux users are all over irc, there are tons of existing channels you can join. (Source: have run an irc network for 20+ years) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- atblakely · 2019-01-02 06:01 Why unreal? I used that as my first server back in 2007, eventually played with others like ratbox. I prefered inspircd and atheme
