New to IRC. I've got some probably basic questions reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2018-10-29 14:22 First off, I want to use this on Android, good apps? preferably something FOSS. Second, I don't understand how the whole thing is structured. You choose to log in to a server (like Freenode) and then choose a "channel" ? Is a channel just a chatroom based on a specific topic? Seems like every time I try to join I have issues (I'll report any issues I have after I try again after learning a bit about IRC in this post) EDIT: when trying to join the Freenode server, I get this message: >freenode-connect: Due to the persistent ongoing spam, all new connections are being set +R (block messages from unidentified users) and will be scanned for vulnerabilities. When I first try to connect it shows: Looking up your hostname... checking Ident No Idnet response Couldn't look up your hostname Welcome to the freenode Internet relay chat Network 46p0v4 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dirtyroshi · 2018-10-29 14:50 Networks (like Freenode) are comprised of multiple servers. When you connect to a network, you are connecting to one of those servers. The network has many channels which are for specific topics (although people can just shoot the shit from time to time). [Here's a good visual diagram.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_Relay_Chat#Clients) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- svn · 2018-10-29 14:57 > Networks (like Freenode) are comprised of multiple servers. When you connect to a network, you are connecting to one of those servers. Which is merely an implementation detail and doesn't concern the user at all. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dirtyroshi · 2018-10-29 15:09 > Second, I don't understand how the whole thing is structured. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- svn · 2018-10-29 15:38 So? Reddit is powered by dozens of servers, but the structure the user sees is "reddit -> subreddit" in the same way IRC is "network -> channels". Servers don't have a place there. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AltReality · 2018-10-29 19:45 As far as your error - Make sure identd is running...looks like freenode won't let you connect without it...it should be a setting in your client. I don't have any recommendations for a FOSS android client unfortunately. - Secondly, you will want to register a nickname with Nickserv - /msg nickserv help should get you the info you need. - Then you will want to ID to nickserv any time you connect after that. You can script it if you don't mind your password being stored in plain text on your system. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nei-- · 2018-11-01 09:58 > Is a channel just a chatroom based on a specific topic? yes > freenode-connect: Due to the persistent ongoing spam... this is an informational notice, you can either ignore it or do: /mode yournick -R to disable the message blocking > Welcome to the freenode Internet relay chat Network this means you're golden, all the other messages (missing identd, missing hostname) are not important. You could install this identd software on your router (or forward ports), but why bother if it doesn't block you from entering freenode (or the network you want to be in) > I want to use this on Android, good apps? IRC has one major drawback, you will miss all messages when you don't have network connectivity. Thus it's not so well suited to use on Android. Recommendations usually circle around running "something IRC" on your "server/VPS" and connect to that using some specialised Android app (example: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=co m.iskrembilen.quasseldroid -- but you need to install and configure Quassel on a server which is accessible from the Internet) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dopaminenotyours · 2018-11-04 01:02 For Android, I like both AndChat & AndroIRC. Both free and fully functional. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2018-11-04 11:59 Couldn't find andchat but I'm going to try androIRC ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dopaminenotyours · 2018-11-04 13:32 Perhaps it's not compatible with your device and so the Play store is hiding it. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.androirc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2018-11-04 13:42 Oh okay ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dopaminenotyours · 2018-11-04 14:10 Actually, I think AndChat has more features anyway, iirc. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2018-11-04 20:30 Do you mean androIRC?
