Creating a web IRC server reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- wereduk · 2018-10-12 20:45 Hi, I would like to ask for help. I'm trying to setup an IRC server, while running Ubuntu server 18.04. I already intalled ircd. I tried looking for guides on the web, but all the information was vague. I appreaciate the efforts! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TheAmazingFailure · 2018-10-12 22:40 I assume you're running ircd-hybrid. I've never used it but the config is very straightforward. [Here](https://raw.githubusercontent.com/gimite/web-irc- util/master/ircd-hybrid/ircd.conf) is an example copy. I'll walk you through some of it in this comment. Here is the server info block. This is just the display name for the server, serverID (sid) should you be running more than one. You won't need to worry about that, leave it at 001. You can fill in your server description here as well. Leave hub set to no, this is for running multiple servers (leaf <--> hub <---> leaf) chained together. Used for load balancing and such. >serverinfo { name = "irc.gimite.net"; sid = "001"; description = "Gimite IRC Server"; hub = no; }; This is the administrator info. This can be whatever you like, but you should put real info if you want your users to be able to contact you about server administration. >administrator { description = "Gimite IRC Server"; name = "Gimite"; email = "gimite+irc@gmail.com"; }; This is a class block. This defines the ping frequency, number of times a user can connect per IP (0 is infinite, probably). I would set this to 2-5, unless you specifically need multiple users to connect from the same IP (College campus internet or such). max_number is the maximum amount of users that can be connected with this class. I would set this to the maximum amount of users total you want to be connected to your server. You shouldn't need more classes unless you plan on customizing your user groups. The rest can be default values. >class { name = "users"; ping_time = 90; number_per_ip = 0; max_number = 200; sendq = 100000; }; This is an auth block, this defines who is put into each class. user can be set by nickname, ident or hostname/IP I believe, allowing you to fit people into the correct class. (user, VIP, moderator, operator) Leave this as default. >auth { user = "*"; class = "users"; }; This is an Oper block, this sets a user as Operator and moves them to the Oper class. Name is the Oper username, user is the ident/hostmask for your oper. It is a very good idea to define the hostmask for your opers. If you don't, and say I got the password to their username somehow, I can become an operator on your server. If my hostmask doesn't match, the server will reject my oper status even though I have the correct password. You will need a unique oper block for each operator on your server. >operator { name = "XXXXX"; user = "*"; password = "XXXXX"; encrypted = yes; class = "opers"; }; This is a listen block, this sets which ports your IRC server will use. You will most likely need a new listen block if you plan to support SSL connections, which you should definitely do. Not sure with this ircd, it varies with each one. >listen { port = 6667; }; This one is unique to this ircd, this is the general block for general server settings. Leave these settings as default. >general { hide_spoof_ips = yes; disable_auth = yes; anti_nick_flood = yes; max_nick_time = 20; max_nick_changes = 5; warn_no_nline = yes; }; I may be missing a bunch of stuff here, but this should be enough to at least start the ircd. It looks like you won't be able to support SSL connections unless you specified so during compiling. If you installed from a deb or repo I'm not sure. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dav_ooh · 2019-01-02 15:05 >description = "Gimmie IRC Server"; > >hub = no; > >}; Hehehe..
