First Time Bot Programming Help Request! reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- guldukat4president · 2018-10-09 17:39 TL;DR: wanna learn how to program an IRC bot for a private server to run a 24/7 RPG game on. need bot to be able to track logs, XP, hunting, and dice rolls. also willing to pay someone to write said bot in the meantime. Hello, I am EXTREMELY new to reddit/this subreddit, and have only ever used it for browsing in the past! However, I've decided I wanted to take up learning how to code an IRC bot. The problem is, I have absolutely no clue where to start and no prior knowledge! I did a quick google search, but found almost TOO much information, haha. Basically now I'm overwhelmed and am looking for a point in the right direction for ULTRA beginners. Alternatively, while I would love to learn the skill, I'd be happy to PAY someone for them to program an IRC bot, but I'm not sure what costs on that would look like, or how maintenance would work. Thanks for any and all replies and I apologize if this is the wrong place to post this! :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cox_11 · 2018-10-09 18:43 I'd be happy to create something like this for you and teach you along the way. My preferred language is Python if thats ok for you. I don't have much experience with IRC Bots (I have made some, mainly for moderation purposes) however have a lot of experience (3 years) with Python, mainly working with web development and databases (experience that can easily transfer to IRC bot creation). My goal would be to not neccessarily create the game, but make a bot/game that you could easily modify, customise and expand through config files and similar. How much were you thinking and what timeframe? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sbz0 · 2018-10-09 19:37 im interested as well. im pretty versed with code but just never wrote an irc bot ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Adoroam · 2018-10-09 22:11 I can do it in js if you'd like. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rvzm · 2018-10-10 08:07 I could make an add-on for eggdrop or something like an mIRC bot. What kind of time frame? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- guldukat4president · 2018-10-10 15:02 I am literally over the moon at these replies. THANK YOU. I have zero preference what language is used, because I have no knowledge in any of them. But, Python is the one I've been reading about! As much as I WANT a bot, I also really want to learn the skill to program them, so I very much appreciate the offer of help to not just create but teach me! As far as how much I was thinking, and what the time frame is, I have no idea! How quickly can you/me/we write a bot well? Haha. All I really know right now that I'll NEED is a way to collect chat logs, a script where people can request XP weekly, and where they can roll for combat with d10 dice. (Vampire the Masquerade: 5th Edition is the game). I'll also need a script that can track "blood pool" separate from like, health/damage itself, if that makes sense? But, I really don't know how complicated this all is. I'll also have to figure out how to get my own private IRC server, at some point! Again, thanks! I'm happy to add you on discord if thats a good way to communicate with you, but no pressure! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- guldukat4president · 2018-10-10 15:02 I will take all the help I can get, thanks! What's the best way to get in touch outside of le reddit? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- guldukat4president · 2018-10-10 15:03 Ooooo, what is js? Sorry if that's a layman question! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- guldukat4president · 2018-10-10 15:04 I'm not sure! What is eggdrop? I literally have NO experience and NO background in this stuff, sorry. I just decided I wanted to learn a few weeks back, randomly, haha. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Adoroam · 2018-10-10 16:19 Javascript. I work in node which runs as a process as opposed to just on browsers. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- guldukat4president · 2018-10-10 17:15 Oh! Okay, so I have another layman question if you don't mind answering! What does a process mean vs "just on browsers"? Like, a background running script? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Adoroam · 2018-10-10 17:18 Yes. I can show you some stuff over discord or something if you'd like. My discord bot is written in nodejs. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cox_11 · 2018-10-10 18:16 I'll PM you my Discord at some point today. Whats your TZ? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- guldukat4president · 2018-10-10 18:35 ty! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- guldukat4president · 2018-10-10 18:36 Pacific! :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rvzm · 2018-10-11 01:36 Eggdrop is a bot that runs 24/7 on a server, which I have lol. I got bored last night and actually started working on something for fun, haven't done a dry run yet, and it's not finished at all, but it's on GitHub right now. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- guldukat4president · 2018-10-11 18:01 Okay, another layman question: what is GitHub, and I hadn't even considered how I RUN my bot on an IRC server, oh god, haha. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rvzm · 2018-10-11 22:04 GitHub is a place where coders/programmers post their scripts for people to use, study, and share. Here's the page for the script I'm working on: https://github.com/rvzm/eggy-rpg ---------------------------------------------------------------------- guldukat4president · 2018-10-12 16:46 Omg, neat. Thank you! One more question and then I swear I'm done! The person I'm attempting to run this game with wants to hire someone rather than wait for me to learn how to program the bot he's after. Do you know where I could go to find someone for this and if so, the cost? Sorry and thank you for help!! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rvzm · 2018-10-25 07:51 I'd see about checking GitHub, they might have something there for that, or fivrr ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2019-01-09 10:02 message me i have years of experience writing irc bots
