How to get "into" IRC reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CodeGlitch · 2018-06-23 20:26 Hello to the fine people of r/irc. Over the last 20 years I've tried to get "into" IRC, and by that I mean find a channel which interests me, and is active with plenty of people. I think I must be choosing the wrong channels, or expecting the wrong thing with IRC, as I always get bored pretty quickly due to the lack of interesting chat on the various channels I subscribe to (usual tech/programming/networking related stuff). I then give up and forget about IRC for a few years until I get the itch to try again. Am I expecting too much from IRC? I don't have any IRL friends that would use IRC, so I'm stuck in that regard. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ahandle · 2018-06-23 20:35 /join ##irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- frumious · 2018-06-24 18:57 For me, these things have been key to forming lasting connections with IRC: 1) having a shared topic in which I have deep interest 2) once in a while having some higher bandwidth comms (voice/video/photos) 3) not being a dick, actually answering questions, having conversations in good faith, not trying to one-up or "win points". 4) initiating conversation when there's no activity and engaging those that do the same. Even with all that, there's only a few channels where I have any success and only a few of them are public.
