Suddenly I cannot connect to any IRC Server reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Edumacated1980 · 2018-06-23 17:04 Hello, I've been using IRC for the past year or so. I mainly use the UnderNet server, and the specific channel called #bookz. All of the sudden today I cannot connect to any irc server from any client. I use Ubuntu 18.04 with weechat as my irc client. Whenever I try to connect to any server I just get connection timed out. I tried connecting to other irc servers just to check if it was something with UnderNet, but I can't connect to any. I also tried downloading HexChat, a different irc client. Having the same issue there. My computer dual boots Windows 10 so I booted into Windows, downloaded HexChat there, and I can also not connect to any irc server through Windows either. I suspect that this has something to do with my isp. I've been using irc for over a year, and I've never had an issued up until now. Does anyone have any idea what the problem is? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- svn · 2018-06-23 17:16 It's a problem with your connection. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Edumacated1980 · 2018-06-23 17:28 Yea, I kinda gathered that. I'm wondering if anyone knows any potential solutions? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- frumious · 2018-06-23 17:48 Try connecting with (or without) SSL. Look for log/error messages that tell you more exactly what's going awry. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- leshoop · 2018-06-23 19:49 did you get a new router or something? if so maybe your port is blocked. that's assuming it's only irc that's messing up. hope you solve your problem soon! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- traaak · 2018-06-23 20:07 did you check the log for errors? depending on which servers you are trying to connect to... i was recently banned from undernet and efnet for reasons unknown to me. i haven't tried to connect in a long time. also, its possible the IP is banned, no? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- alehbye · 2018-06-24 05:31 Are you connecting via dns address (ie. undernet.net) or ip address? It could be a dns server issue. Try using the IP. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Edumacated1980 · 2018-06-24 09:20 The only things I see in the log are things like irc: connection refused, and irc: reconnecting to server... I've looked in all of the log files in the .weechat directory. I'm not sure if there are any other log files in which I could glean any other info. Do you know how I could find out if I'd been banned from undernet? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Edumacated1980 · 2018-06-24 09:25 I've checked all of the logs that I can find, and I don't see anything other than irc: connection refused. I'm not sure how to connect with/without ssl. I'm just using the same method to connect that I have been for the past year without issues. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Edumacated1980 · 2018-06-24 09:25 I didn't get a new router. I'm not having any other network issues at all. Internet is working fine. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Edumacated1980 · 2018-06-24 09:26 Thanks for the suggestion. I just tried to connect to undernet using the direct ip address from their website. No love. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- frumious · 2018-06-24 11:24 A few more ideas: * Just in case you haven't found it already, this log should have details on any failures `~/.weechat/logs/core.weechat.weechatlog` * Run weechat's `/fset` command and check the various `irc.server.NAME.*` settings for your connection for UnderNet. It's here you can switch on/off SSL. You may also have to sync that switch with a change to the port number. * Try also using a different IRC server. It looks like UnderNet doesn't have a DNS round robin so maybe the particular server you used in the past went tits up recently. I find a list here http://www.undernet.org/servers/ * Try a different IRC network entirely to rule out that you have been banned, or just to confirm that things aren't more fundamentally broken on the client side. Edit: seems undernet doesn't support SSL, so that suggestion is a red herring: http://irc.netsplit.de/servers/?net=Undernet ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NebInNeb · 2018-06-24 11:28 I don't think it is your connection, I think it is an Undernet thing. I've been having issues connection with my VPN, I turn it off and I can connect just fine. I refuse however to connect to Undernet without a VPN however. Something screwy is going on with Undernet ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mykethomas · 2018-06-26 02:20 I've been getting the same problem. All of a sudden, I can't connect to any of the UnderNet servers, though their webpages come up just fine. Tracerouting just suddenly falters and dies somewhere along one backbone or another, so I expect that it's something going on on their end, not anything specific to you or I. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Edumacated1980 · 2018-06-26 19:44 Yea, I can't connect to highwaynet, or whatever it's called either. I did poke around and was able to connect to some other random irc servers so I'm beginning to get the feeling that it is something messed up on UnderNet's side. If it's not UnderNet, I'm curious as to if maybe comcast is blocking the connection. Do you use comcast? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mykethomas · 2018-06-26 23:46 Yeah, as a matter of fact, I do use Comcast. I had been wondering if they might be the problem, but don't know folks who use IRC other than the folks *on* IRC, so didn't have anyone else I could ask about it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kambijoy1234 · 2018-06-27 00:01 Looks like undernet is blocked in US, I can connect if using vpn with a different country server ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Edumacated1980 · 2018-06-28 09:56 Holly shit, that worked! I cant believe I didn't try that before. I have a vpn subscription, and I already tried connecting to undernet while connected, but I was on a server in Canada. I didn't even think to try any other countries. It didn't dawn on me that they would have blocked access to all of North America, but they sure as shit did. Or someone did. I'm on a vpn server in Brazil right now and was able to connect no problem. That's a little disconcerting that they've blocked access to this from USA. Thanks for the heads up. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kambijoy1234 · 2018-06-28 10:49 You are welcome! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- VersedNJ · 2018-07-31 00:50 is there a chance they made #bookz invite only? And as others said, the undernet can be funny at times for connections. Try different servers. Had times where I couldn't connect with [us.undernet.org](https://us.undernet.org) and was able to get on with eu.undernet.org. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- clintsharp · 2018-07-31 16:40 I'm on a number of networks from my Comcast connection, but Undernet specifically I cannot get to work. I can connect from irccloud which I use directly (not coming through my home connection), so something is definitely funky with Comcast and Undernet. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Zynn3d · 2018-08-01 06:23 I also used to be able to connect to undernet/bookz, however am not able to now unless I turn my VPN on. I disagree with another poster's suggestion that the U.S is blocked from undernet as I can set my VPN to a U.S. state and still connect. Perhaps Comcast is blocking undernet? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Musikaman · 2018-08-01 07:36 I've been having the same problem. Was able to connect on [Budapest.H U.EU.UnderNet.org](http://www.undernet.org/servers/?info=85) 6668. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Musikaman · 2018-08-01 07:36 I've been having the same problem. I think it maybe do to servers being full. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Musikaman · 2018-08-02 04:15 I mean, maybe? I've never really had a problem connecting to it until recently... and if I use my phone I've been able to connect on the Tmobile network, but DCC was having a rough time. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- clintsharp · 2018-08-02 17:25 Thanks, that worked for me too!
