How to host IRC reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2018-04-18 21:14 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- reentry · 2018-04-19 00:26 I would personally recommend trying to get a channel with one of the existing IRC networks, so you don't have to host anything. Freenode if you're software related, espernet if it's related to games, I've heard good things about OFTC and Rizon too. I use revolution IRC on mobile, there are several good choices to pick from, just try them out! IRC dosen't have voice chat support internally, you'd have to have a separate setup for that (maybe mumble or similar). There might be something with DCC that I don't know about though. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2018-04-19 00:26 [removed] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- seiyria · 2018-04-19 01:01 Hosting IRC on your own is painful at the very best. You may as well honestly stay with discord if you have to host a server yourself. That said, if you can just go onto a server that exists, that's probably for the best. You would need to host it on a server, and yes, you can link nodes, but you don't want to be hosting it on your computer. Voice chat is not possible natively via IRC. There are plenty of IRC apps. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- subuserdo · 2018-04-19 04:10 With a little bit of *nix knowledge it's not difficult to set up a simple server - install ircd-hybrid and thoroughly read/update the config file. You can cluster but you're on your own as far as configuration goes. Mumble is in the same vein as far as self hosting goes, just install and config, bam voice chat ---------------------------------------------------------------------- seratine · 2018-04-19 10:03 I think you should find a stable freedom of speech network that values your privacy and create a channel or multiple channels there. Voice chat is not possible on IRC, you could use something else for that (like teamspeak or mumble). There are plenty of mobile IRC clients so regardless of whether you choose to host the whole IRC network yourself or use a pre-existing one your clients can connect on mobile no problem. If you do choose to go through all the work of setting up an IRC network (which I really wouldn't recommend for only 20-30 people) you could check out InspIRCd for the server software with anope services. Good luck! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- phate408 · 2018-04-19 18:03 That's funny, our IRC network rapidly shrunk as all of our channels moved to Discord. Nice to see there's a few people doing the reverse. I would second jumping on to an existing network, and the sentiment that in the case that you're comfortable with Linux, it's a fairly trivial thing to set up. You can find some reasonably priced VPS offerings around, we've used Digital Ocean in the past with great success. Although, I would check their TOS to see if they still allow it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- JankyDoodle · 2018-04-25 15:18 I don't know. When you're talking about running a small server for a few people, it's not that big of a deal. I run one for about 10 people. I pay $20 a year for a dedicated host, and another $20 for the domain name. It's a Debian box running UnrealIRCD & Anope. Took me a few hours to set it up. Haven't logged in in a year. Everything is working fine. It's not that hard. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- juko_life · 2018-05-08 21:22 I lmao because it's literally ironic that someone is trying to enter to the IRC while others leaving. I really wonder why you want to move to IRC from discord.
