No Active IRC channels anywhere? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- marsstroller · 2018-03-29 20:33 I’ve just discover the internet relay chat and I’ve spent a good few hours going on different networks and browsing channels, but every single channel I’ve come across, whether 1 user or 1000, has had absolutely no activity at all! Not one message! I waited for ages and sent loads of messages and still nothing! Am I doing something wrong? Is it because I havnt registered my nickname on the network? I’m using BitchX and on freenode and a few other networks. Do people just not use it anymore? Help appreciated, sorry if this is a silly question I’ve only just discovered irc. Thanks for the help. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jhoneycutt · 2018-03-29 20:57 You probably shouldn't be using BitchX. It's no longer actively developed. If you want a console client, try irssi or weechat. IRC isn't as active as newcomers expect. People leave their clients connected when they're not around, so although a channel looks like it's full of people, most of them are computers with no one sitting at them. I'm in 20+ channels, and there's usually a conversation going in one or two at a time, but it's not uncommon for it to take hours before someone responds to what you say in the less active channels. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- marsstroller · 2018-03-29 21:35 Oh okay fair enough. I do think that’s kind of sad because to me the main concept was that it was a live chat, but in reality now it seems to be more like a good old forum, which kind of makes it obsolete. Still interesting though. I like BitchX it worked for me, I used the 2014 release. I do think it’s a shame irc isn’t used like it was designed to be, but oh well it’s still nice to have and explore I guess. I’ll keep looking and try leaving a few channels open for a bit. Thanks for your comment!!! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- coldf2 · 2018-03-29 21:37 Try freenode for specific topics. They seem to be more active. Abjects has some active channels as well. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nupogodi · 2018-03-29 21:48 Snoonet is hella active, if you're a regular on any sub with a channel and want to be part of the reddit Illuminati. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2018-03-29 22:42 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Monkespank · 2018-03-29 23:42 Casual conversation and mnfh usually have active chats going. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- aperson · 2018-03-30 00:51 It is live chat. It's just that the majority of us have been on IRC for many many years. We've amassed a ton of channels and we can't pay attention to all of them. https://xkcd.com/1782/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Mansyn · 2018-03-30 13:40 EFNet still has a few rooms where people talk. I like the piratebay and 2600 there. But it may never be like is was in previous decades, it used to be booming with activity on every server. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Dementati · 2018-03-30 14:23 It is a live chat, it's just that conversations happen at sporadic intervals. You would need shitloads of people in a channel for there to be constant activity, and if that was the case it would most likely be too crowded for anybody to get a word in edgewise. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- iWORKBRiEFLY · 2018-03-30 19:21 Try Criten or Abjects, those networks are active ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Giraffestock · 2018-03-30 23:16 This sounds like a larger issue than what people think. If you're joining channels on, say, Freenode with 1000+ users, messages are definitely being sent. I wonder if BitchX is misbehaving? Try a different client, and report back? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- maxel3g3nd · 2018-04-01 11:51 I've seen quite a few people talk in ##security on Freenode ---------------------------------------------------------------------- pumkinhat · 2018-04-02 10:16 I'm on QuakeNet, there are active channels there. What are you looking for specifically? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cpbtc · 2018-04-07 02:32 What takesover the IRC then? Discord, Telegram, xmpp? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TheAleksander · 2018-04-07 17:50 yeah look like discord has taken over. but discord centers around a topic/game/community. i usually stay on "city name/country" IRC channels. its a shame, IRC was alot of fun, and you could build your own client very easy with just the perfect setup ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cpbtc · 2018-04-08 09:12 mIRC is for old school :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TheIronMike · 2018-04-19 14:39 #darkscience on irc.darkscience.net (6697 SSL ONLY) Computer, Tech, everything chat... i've been on this network for over 10 years now. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2018-04-22 02:31 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Madbrad200 · 2018-04-22 10:44 [Snoonet](https://snoonet.org/communities) absolutely is active. #psychic, #textfriends, #mnfh, #depression, #anxiety, #trollchromosomes, #freemasonry, #protectandserve, #friend etc etc. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Gra55hopp3r · 2018-07-08 15:15 Well i must say, after reading your post i got curious so i installed Hexchat and try to connect to DALnet.. when i /list, theres a lot of channel with more than 100 users, so i joined one of the biggest one which is #jakarta that had around 400 users, and a couple of more channels.. i saw something peculiar on those channels, that theres a bot running some kind of charade or trivia game, and there are people participating it.. i wonder if those are real people or just another bot, but the main question is. what the heck are they doing playing trivia on IRC in 2018..?? maybe someone can give me some enlightment.. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- VersedNJ · 2018-07-30 23:46 IRCnet #worldchat is pretty active. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Firefishe · 2022-05-18 01:02 One of the primary reasons that IRC isn't as active as it used to be, is that it's heyday was around the 1990s and early thousands. Reddit, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and the like have pretty much laid waste to IRC-land, unfortunately. The open source community is still active, but the glory days of DALnet and Undernet are a bit dated. I remember when one could log on to Undernet and download just about any type of music from private collections one could ever want. mIRC was the Windows-client of choice at that time, and mIRC Scripting was a major thing in it's day, with some scripts costing money to obtain from the programmers who wrote them--and there's nothing wrong with that! :-) PIRCH98 was a client that I used with a special script for it called PirchPIK98, which made it extremely useful in it's day. PIRCH was a bit more GUI-like than mIRC, with PIRCH having more buttons, and mIRC being more drop-down-menu driven. mIRC had the hedgemony, however, in scripting, and eventually overshadowed PIRCH, with PIRCH98 being the last incarnation before it stopped being developed. The IRC of two decades ago wouldn't be able to flourish, today, just due to DRM and other pertinent legal issues. That said, simple chat room conversation would be nice to see, again, but even sites like Reddit have taken up where USENet Newsgroups used to be the canon. Real-time group chats seem to be on the wane, save for some platforms such as Discord, although that's mostly used for voice during game play. I really would like to see IRC come back as the platform of choice for real-time, group chat. We used to use all kinds of colors, emoticons, and a lot of other things that came alive in text lines. Graphics have improved to the point where emotive iconography has gotten even more expressive, so, aside from textual storytelling-- which I still find amazing, being an old-time bookworm--I don't think it's probable that people will be re-flocking to the IRC platform. IRC requires a certain amount of technical knowledge, and I just do not know how much the average, modern day computer end-user has in that area. A few of us, certainly, but I don't think there's as much technical knowledge being bandied about anymore, save for older users such as myself. And my knowledge of scripting is minimal to nil, in terms of practical application (pun heartily intended :-P). Having said that, I hope that you will continue to explore IRC and the historical elements that grew the modern Internet into what it is, today! Happy IRC'ing! (IRC Nick: Firefishe, on any platform.) My favorite IRC Client to date is KVIrc, an open source, free (as in beer) IRC client on all PC and Mac OS platforms. (Linux/Windows/Mac). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Firefishe · 2022-05-18 01:08 Gads! I remember chatroom overload! I had almost forgotten! Lines going by so fast one could hardly see! :-O ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Firefishe · 2022-05-18 01:10 Hey! Trivia is an IRC staple! It's also boat loads of fun! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- blahpotuspivx · 2022-11-17 01:10 chat.msn.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------- blahpotuspivx · 2022-11-17 01:10 yes
