Public chatrooms with chat history available?
reddit / irc

Hi guys!

I'm trying to find online topic-based discussions where the chat
history is available. I'm studying instant online communities for a
university project and can't think of anywhere else I could look. I
only know of IRC as public chat rooms for a massive variety of
available topics, but there is typically no history available.

So does anyone know of a repository of IRC rooms with chat history
available, OR an IRC-alternative that would have history available?
Thanks!

P.s. what's the best IRC client to use?

A few channels might do public logging. But almost none of them do.
Good luck on getting logs of a channel from X minutes, hours, days,
weeks, months, years ago, some people might share them, some won't, or
they simply don't exist.

Do you want to start WW5, yes there has to be a WW3 and 4 first, but
fighting over IRC clients is so intense it skips over the other two.

On a more serious note, its a matter of opinion.

Windows: mIRC / HexChat / Adiirc

Linux: WeeChat (cli) / Irssi (cli) / HexChat

Mac OS X: Textual

Cellphones: ???

I use Yaaic or HoloIRC for Android, and Colloquy for iOS.

Chat logs for irc are typically stored client side, so what you are
asking for may not be easily found. Some admins run bots to persist a
copy of the entire log, but in my experience, not something theyd
willingly give up.

For clients try mirc or hexchat for windows.
