Make IRC Great Again reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- badon_ · 2018-01-17 06:08 Please, Freenode. I'm begging you. Don't become another backward EFnet wasteland. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- svn · 2018-01-17 10:43 One of the reasons I love IRC is that there are no "official" logs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- KindOne · 2018-01-17 12:26 What are you rambling about? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- KindOne · 2018-01-17 12:27 What exactly is wrong with freenode? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kellyzdude · 2018-01-17 13:17 Yep. Use a bouncer if you want timestamped logs (or logs at all) while your client was disconnected. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- badon_ · 2018-01-17 23:29 /u/svn, /u/kellyzdude, /u/KindOne, when newcomers see IRC for the first time, it looks dead because IRC is still showing a blank screen instead of showing currently active conversations. Even in channels with thousands of users, there are often times when no one says anything for 10+ minutes. You can't expect newcomers to set up bouncer just to check if IRC is interesting or not for the first time. Fundamentally, that's the #1 reason Discord, Slack, QQ, etc are all growing rapidly while IRC shrinks as the old-timers slowly age and die. Even reddit is moving away from their snoonet IRC servers and instead adding some newfangled web chat for young whippersnappers. This problem is easy to fix with IRCv3 chat history feature. It can be configured per-channel, so channels can control how far back the log goes. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- svn · 2018-01-17 23:31 I don't give a fuck about newcomers. I'd rather have IRC die than see it full of newcomers. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- badon_ · 2018-01-17 23:33 I mention Freenode because it's one of the more progressive IRC networks that still has a meaningful place in the world of live chat venues. See this comment of mine for more details about what Freenode and all other IRC networks should do next: https://www.reddit.com/r/irc/comments/7qz0z0/make_irc_great_again/dsub dz7/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- wodencafe · 2018-01-17 23:46 Just use Slack Chat. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- KindOne · 2018-01-18 06:17 [12:03:21] * Idiot has joined #foobar [12:03:27] Hello!? Anyone here!? [12:03:32] Hello? OMG 0 response time [12:03:35] * Idiot has quit. ... IRC != Instant Responce Chat. Look Skippy, if some idiot can't stay around for more than a few minutes, they do not need to be on IRC. >Fundamentally, that's the #1 reason Discord, Slack, QQ, etc are all growing rapidly while IRC shrinks as the old-timers slowly age and die. [[[citation needed]]](https://xkcd.com/285/) >Even reddit Implying as if reddit itself has some official irc network... >Even reddit is moving away from their snoonet IRC servers and instead adding some newfangled web chat for young whippersnappers. [[[citation needed]]](https://xkcd.com/285/) Fun fact, Snoonet is some random irc network created by some mod on /r/irc that went around modmail'ing the mods of various subreddits asking them to move their irc channels from other networks into Snoonet. Not all subreddits are on Snoonet. Some are on freenode, Cyanide-X, QuakeNet, etc... Some have even been on Discord, QQ, Slack, whatever... since the creation of those things. Fun fact, Slack is amazing in office settings where people are not technical or smart enough to figure out how to use IRC. >This problem is easy to fix with IRCv3 chat history feature. It can be configured per-channel, so channels can control how far back the log goes. What a steaming pile of bullshit. I don't want some random channel showing X amount of lines some person joins. How am I supposed to publicly trash talk about someone and get away with it? Now they magically show up and get the last X lines of the conversation? How am I supposed to deny the trash talking? "FAKE LOGS! SAD!" This also makes a great way of "drive by logging" channels and pasting random crap on the internet. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- c6da9ef157ee76a9e913 · 2018-01-18 19:44 It depends on the application. For what Slack costs I'm trying to convince my boss that we could build our own IRC network AND pay someone to maintain it. But we would need to meet sox compliance. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 546875674c6966650d0a · 2018-01-27 21:57 That seems like a lot more effort than you probably want to focus at a solution, and a draw on effort in other business areas. Fun maybe, and 'cheaper' purely on a financial aspect maybe... but I don't know if it's a better solution. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 546875674c6966650d0a · 2018-01-27 21:57 Undernet all the way baby!
