New user and I know how to get eBooks and that's all I want, for now.
I don't know much about viruses on irc and how to protect myself from
accidentally downloading them. I am paranoid after a close call with a
ransomware from a torrent. In addition, I intend to use a vpn but is
it really necessary.

If I was unclear sorry. Please just give me a rundown on viruses,
vpn's and anything else you feel is necessary, regarding IRC. Thanks.

You can sandbox your downloads inside a VirtualBox Linux instance. All
free, and you won't have to worry about viruses, unless you keep
sensitive data on your eBook.

Upload any executables to virustotal.com (they also have a neat
desktop helper tool that saves you the upload if the files hash is
already in their database).

Other than that apply common sense and don't run any programs you're
not sure about.

Thanks. I got the desktop helper. From what you are telling me, I take
it that viruses are not as common as I thought.
