I'm not sure what you mean by this. It sounds like you connected to
freenode instead of to some other IRC network. But I can't tell from
the context.

Does freenode do IP masking? That'll make everyone else appear to you
as the same hostname (with something unique before the domain). They
aren't actually on that host.

Yes that is host cloaking it’s enabled in the irc server software.
