My IRC bot project written in Perl reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- atblakely · 2017-10-14 17:57 Just figured I’d post this here for those that are interested. It has some bugs but overall it’s pretty stable. [shadow](http://github.com/ablakely/shadow) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- damiankw · 2017-10-15 02:24 Not bad. I basically write a very basic IRC bot in every new language I learn, even if I get bored of it way too quickly to actually do anything with. I wish IRC was still booming like back in the late 90/early 2000's so I could develop things that will actually get used! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- atblakely · 2017-10-15 02:44 I know right I started using it in 07, started out writing mirc scripts then learned perl and eventually C and JavaScript and I know the basics of a few other languages. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- damiankw · 2017-10-15 02:49 Yeah same, started in `99 with mIRC Script, then went onto Eggdrop Tcl, then went for a heap of stand-alone languages. Ahh, I miss the days of IRC. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- atblakely · 2017-10-15 02:52 I’ve messed with eggdrop tcl but I really don’t care for the syntax. That being said I had plan for a module for shadow that would let it run eggdrop tcl scripts. http://github.com/ablakely/pepper ---------------------------------------------------------------------- atblakely · 2017-10-15 02:54 I also had a module repo system with a web interface that I wrote in perl but I lost the code. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- damiankw · 2017-10-15 03:00 Yeah, Tcl is definitely an acquired taste, after doing it for so long and so much of it, it's second nature. When I was using it properly (like, 2000-2002 - https://github.com/damiankw/eggdrop.services.tcl) I would build pretty much everything in it. If I needed to parse a text file? calculate something? whatever I needed, I'd just whip up a small Tcl script to do it. These days I use PHP instead, as it's more readily available due to webdev. I saw pepper, it's a pretty neat idea but I wouldn't say it would come to fruition to be honest. I mean, sure you'll be able to run Tcl on it, but Eggdrop Tcl is a whole different kettle of fish, as every proc/var in tcl-commands.doc is custom to Eggdrop and nothing to do with Tcl itself, you'd have to actually pull parts of eggdrop to run as a processor? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- atblakely · 2017-10-15 03:05 I was thinking just write wrappers for the tcl api functions to interface with my bot. The tcl perl module actually lets you define tcl functions with perl code. I’m sure it’ll be a lot of work but it’d be cool play with.
