Help! (IRC noob alert) reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- xGAMBLERx · 2017-10-09 05:19 Ok guys, here's my issue: I never got into IRC in the old days when I spent most of my time on the net or gaming, so I never learned anything about it when I was more technologically inclined. Now fast-forward 9 years of just about zero gaming/net surfing (kids and wife and dealing with my gaming addiction). I start using the net again for some specific purposes, which require the use of IRC. I take some advice and start using mIRC (this is approximately 1.5 years ago) and everything is ok. I learned the absolute basics and get by. Then I get busy at work for like 6-8 months and have no time for the net, and when things settle down... mIRC wont let me use it free anymore. I used to be able to just ignore it and wait like 10 seconds and launch it anyways, but no dice this time. Read some suggestions online about changing the command promts in the script ect... still doesn't work. So now I need help figuring the issue out or just get a different program. I need something simple, only using it to gain access to specific networks and chatting occasionally. Ready... and GO! Thanks in advance! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- A-UNDERSCORE-D · 2017-10-09 05:31 Personally I use [hexchat](https://hexchat.github.io/), though there are many other clients, with varying levels of difficulty in use. you could also use something like [kiwiIRC](http://kiwiirc.com/nextclient/) which is a web based client ---------------------------------------------------------------------- xGAMBLERx · 2017-10-09 05:37 I’m looking for the basics, no frills. Don’t like web-based, prefer a stand alone program. All I’m looking to do is join private networks to chat with people about technical stuff my work involves and these dudes are old school web fiends that love IRC so that’s how they get together. Simpler the better for me please. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Amane_VIII · 2017-10-09 05:54 HexChat. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- leshoop · 2017-10-09 14:00 There's usually always a 50% off code for mIRC floating around online, making it $10 instead of $20. Can try hexchat like others have mentioned as well if you don't want to pay, I just like mIRC the most out of all of them. [here's a 50% off code for mIRC I found](https://www.mirc.com/register.php?coupon=MIRC-SWV0-MNKL) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- slimethecold · 2017-10-10 02:54 Hexchat is great!! I would highly suggest it as a fellow IRC veteran. If you're wanting something that handles other instant messaging as well, you might want to check out Pidgin. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- xGAMBLERx · 2017-10-10 04:08 Hexchat seems to be working my out ok. Thanks for the advice guys. Will let you know if it goes south. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- XavierNite · 2017-10-11 02:21 AdiIRC is awesome, and scripts from mIRC work with it too. You should have no trouble migrating. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2017-10-13 18:18 [deleted]
