What's an alternative to IRC for light talk? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DistFunc · 2017-09-30 09:47 I was once on IRC circa 2000, and one could talk about poetry and spirituality. Now those rooms are all dried up, owned by Debian and campers. What alternatives to IRC are there? Thanks! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TingPing · 2017-09-30 12:23 Discord has a massive variety of topical rooms but there is no great public listing of them and I certainly don't know any about spirituality. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dirtydan · 2017-09-30 15:43 I miss IRC and Usenet. Reddit probably does did me what newsgroups used to but I've never seen a good replacement for irc. *edit "does for me" stupid autocorrect ---------------------------------------------------------------------- efreak2004 · 2017-09-30 20:01 By campers, do you mean the BNC accounts I've had running for the past several years just in case I want to come back and talk to someone every ~6 months? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DistFunc · 2017-09-30 20:26 Hi efreak, By "campers", I mean all the @ and + people who appear to set the tone, even though often only one in 20 is actually present. Ultimately this particular point may be irrelevant, but it is true that there used to be millions of people in what you might call "easy talking" chat rooms on AOL and IRC circa 2000 and before, which simply doesn't exist on AOL or IRC anymore, as far as I know. So I am asking where it might have gone. It's not that AOL (or IRC) are icons ... I'm just asking, where did it all go? Surely there should have been more - much more such chat - as time went by. Instead, I find almost no poetry or spiritual talk, per se, on IRC. Rooms that have that name are depressingly vacant or off topic. (And of course AOL effectively died a long time ago.) Thanks for your help! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tobsn · 2017-09-30 21:02 telegram ---------------------------------------------------------------------- efreak2004 · 2017-10-01 04:34 It's not a lot of help, but if you prefer using an IRC client, you could run a copy of bitlbee for Steam, Discord, Twitter, Facebook, etc. Full list of supported protocols [here](https://wiki.bitlbee.org/). If you don't want to run your own server, they also have a list of public servers [here](https://www.bitlbee.org/main.php/servers.html). I personally prefer being ~, but that's not available on all servers. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rec0d3 · 2017-10-01 05:21 Discord is the best alternative. Love it. And it's evolved so much. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DistFunc · 2017-10-01 05:41 Thanks, TingPing and rec0d3. I will check out Discord. I'm so tired of exhausting rooms off topic; trying to talk spirituality or poetry into rooms ruled by the disdainful. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rec0d3 · 2017-10-01 05:42 Feel free to PM me to come in and check it out. Can show you a few things. It not only has text chat, but it's also voice chat as well. The new beta enables screenshare, video calling, and file transfer. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DistFunc · 2017-10-01 06:24 A very generous offer. In a week or three, I hope to hail you on Discord. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- smj711 · 2017-10-02 02:22 Come join us in #hermetics on Undernet :D ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mairedemerde · 2017-10-06 01:03 heh ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dopaminenotyours · 2017-10-08 20:43 Yea Discord has somewhat revitalized the glory of old IRC for me. Being able to find gatherings of strangers who are like minded, and not just idling for days on end. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DistFunc · 2017-10-22 10:48 rec0d3 and dopamine, I got Discord, but it's not doing anything for me. I don't see a place to find a thousand rooms on various topics. It has a little "Friends" squiggly, but of course, me being new, have none. Don't want friends, want a thousand conversation rooms. Help? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- YachtRock_SoSmooth · 2017-11-06 09:48 Is there a way to just list all the rooms on Discord?
