Idiot's Guide: What is IRC? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- questionman1 · 2017-09-17 06:38 So, in my journey into Linux, I've seen that every distro I've tried, without fail, has had an IRC client by default. That makes me think that this is a useful tool that people use often. But this culture has completely flown over my head and I'm at a loss of what IRC is, what benefits it provides what it does that other messaging systems and protocols don't. And do people actually use it? My first question is going to be in regards to and privacy: are your chats encrypted? Can chats be traced to a user/ip address (if you use it normally and not do some fancy voodoo)? I'm just so lost on this thing I don't even know what to ask. If someone can give me a quick guide, I'd appreciate it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TwiztedZero · 2017-09-17 07:06 Read [The Tao of IRC](http://www.irc.org/history_docs/tao.html). Web pages were not so dynamic. There was no Ajax, no pages.. MSN Messenger came strong as a chat platform.. but before that there was IRC It is still active today, but 15 years ago, every body was using it. My sexo dart school, a small one, its channel would have about 60 people in the evening. People fighting for status (voice, op, etc) People looking to make friends... Big channel dinners, meeting strangers... It was the 70's again, but digitally...! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cusco · 2017-09-17 11:43 IRC was the big chatting meeting point on the boom of the internet.
