Is there a way to start your own IRC server without using freenode? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- yunocchi · 2017-08-14 00:33 The short answer to this question is YES! Running an IRC network requires a fair bit of effort, though. You'd be best to read up on how it works and even experiment with a sandbox if you want to learn the basics. All the best! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Pajamrama · 2017-08-14 00:36 any pointers on how i can? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- yunocchi · 2017-08-14 00:38 https://www.google.com/search?q=set+up+an+irc+server ---------------------------------------------------------------------- damiankw · 2017-08-14 08:38 Of course! It all depends on what you want to use it for and what you have to put it all on. At the end of the day, an IRC Server is a single server which runs on a single computer/server somewhere on a half decent internet connection which is online 24/7. If you want a network of servers so people can connect even if there's a single server outage, you'll just need to have more servers. On top of that, you simply need some services, if you want services, to control things when an IRC Operator isn't around. So, if you have access to a good internet connection and a computer that's online 24/7, you can download an IRCd and some IRC Services, put them all together and then attach a name to it all, purchase a domain if you want one. If you don't have any machines you can do this with, you'll have to get yourself a VPS or something to host it all on. Instead of doing it ALL yourself, you could join one of the smaller networks and run a server for them .. but you give up some of your overall access so they can control their network properly.
