I'm new to irc but I downloaded hexchat and am trying to connect to IRChighway and I get this error. (unable to get local issuer certificate.? (20)) Does anyone know how to solve it or can link me to a forum that can help me? I found one forum that was talking about it but I couldn't understand all the programmer language. Thanks for your help! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- webvictim · 2017-07-21 11:06 This generally means that you are trying to connect to an IRC server that is secured with SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) but has what is known as a self-signed certificate that can't be verified against a trusted authority. (To check if you're using SSL, look at the 'port' setting in Hexchat's server settings - IRCHighway uses ports 6697 and 9999 for SSL) Normally, SSL certificates (for Google, Facebook, Amazon etc) are issued by a number of central bodies which operating systems "trust" by default. These usually (in the past) cost money, so to save on costs some servers would generate their own certificates - this was free, but has the disadvantage that the certificate isn't approved by a central authority and therefore can't be trusted implicitly by the operating system. If you expect that this IRC server is going to be using a self-signed certificate, you can do one of two things. You can disable SSL verification for the server (there will probably be a tickbox or something under the server settings menu in Hexchat) or you can find a way to add the certificate as trusted under the operating system's security settings.
