Generalized list of servers and what their 'genre' is? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- UTMorpheus · 2017-07-18 00:33 After we finally got AOL back in 1997, I stopped using dial-in BBS - mostly because of the long distance phone bills, and because my parents found out that their 10 year old was accessing things that makes today's "deep web" look like a Disney site. I then heard about IRC a few months later, and turned into a MASSIVE IRC addict until well after high school - during the golden age. Taught myself C and made hundreds of scripts, including multiple file server, XDCC, and chat/trivia bots. SOOO many fond memories and all-nighters in various rooms talking to some of the coolest people I'd ever met. Fell out of IRC about 3-4 years after the death of Mirc-X, coinciding mainly with full-time employment and becoming of drinking age. I'm now looking for IRC communities to try and get back into, but it seems that all the old servers I knew no longer have those types of crowds around them. I noticed a few posts where people mentioned that x network no longer has the 'nerdy crowd' and y network is mostly about coding projects, etc. I'm wondering if anyone out there can help create a short list of servers that are good for xyz; to help new-to- IRC and returning relics like me to find communities that align with their interests. **I'M** mainly looking for communities based around general chat with laid back people, and also a community based around computer hardware and builds. I was the CTO of a company for 8 years building gaming machines and repairing anything with a circuit board, so I'd like to give my knowledge/experience to whoever can use it, and learn new tricks from other people. Sorry for the wall of text, IRC made me despise 'chat speak' so I taught myself grammar and speed typing. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- spling44 · 2017-07-18 11:48 best place to look these days seems to be https://kiwiirc.com/search kiwiirc is the only promising project for IRC in my eyes at the moment I invite you to come chat with us in #stats on irc.rscript.org we are a pretty general chat community that has been together for over 12 years now, and we could stand to see some new faces. I think you'd fit in well. connect to freenode. there are bound to be channels there that will align with your interests ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Madbrad200 · 2017-07-19 00:08 I'd highly recommend Snoonet. [Lots of great communities](https://snoonet.org/communities) there. Can use these to search networks/channels: https://irc-source.com http://irc.netsplit.de ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TheContrarian2 · 2017-07-21 03:35 Thanks for this post. Even though there is not a lot of content here yet, I am trying to get back into IRC after having not been around since the 90s. Look like Undernet is still around! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PythonTech · 2017-07-22 22:28 This may not be what everyone wants to hear (especially coming from a IRC subreddit) but a lot of communication like this has moved over to Discord. It is a lot easier to setup and use, has way more features than IRC could ever have, and doesn't cost a cent. I susgest taking a good look at the platform and seeing what it has to offer. What a lot of people like about it is the cross platform ability. Don't want to install an program? Fine use the [website](https://discordapp.com/). Want to have it for mobile? [Android App](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.discord) and [iOS](https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/discord-chat-for- games/id985746746). You'll never need a bouncer like ZNC again, since discord keeps track of history by default. You can join a channel now and scroll back to when it was created if you want. You'll also get any notices of nick mentions when you sign back in, as people will be able to tag usernames if they are offline. There are a lot of subreddits that have channels / servers made that you can join, here is the one for /r/BuildAPC, since you said you are looking for that kind of thing: https://discordapp.com/invite/buildapc
