How can I set up a basic IRC server? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Suspect_Zer0 · 2017-06-22 14:42 How can I set up a basic IRC server? I went through and set up ircd and znc but couldn't manage to get them to work. Does anybody have a guide I can follow that's easy for a new Ubuntu user? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- yunocchi · 2017-06-22 14:52 Do you want to set up the IRC network itself, or do you want to set up a ZNC? ZNC and an ircd are two completely different things. If you're looking at setting up an IRCd, a good place to start would be choosing the IRCd software you want to use. The [InspIRCd](https://www.inspircd.org/) package is popular and has easy to follow documentation. Best of luck! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Suspect_Zer0 · 2017-06-22 15:45 What are the differences between an IRC network and ZNC? I only know that ZNC is an IRC bouncer. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- yzcd · 2017-06-22 20:43 I've never used a bouncer before but I believe it's a way to have your client connected to a server network even when it's not. An ircd(eamon) is the server software itself. So the question is is your goal to have your client always connected to a network or are you trying to run a server yourself? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Suspect_Zer0 · 2017-06-22 20:46 Trying to run a server myself so I can chat with my friends through IRC. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- yzcd · 2017-06-22 22:59 Well I can't explain how to set one up in a single Reddit comment, but /u/yunocchi posted a link to inspircd documentation. I will point out that a lot of the effort is actually involved in the networking itself rather than the ircd so make sure you understand port binding, port forwarding, static/dynamic IPs, firewalls etc. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Suspect_Zer0 · 2017-06-23 01:00 Can you post the link here? Couldn't find it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- yzcd · 2017-06-23 01:16 [Installation guide](https://wiki.inspircd.org/Installation_From_Source) [Configuration](https://wiki.inspircd.org/Configuration) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- fnordfjord · 2017-06-23 22:19 Are you new to IRC? Setting up your own IRC server can be an interesting learning experience for sure, but if all you want to do is chat with your friends, just connect to one of the many [existing networks](http://irc.netsplit.de/networks/top100.php), start your own channel, and tell your friends to join it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Suspect_Zer0 · 2017-06-24 09:00 I tried it, they can't. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- fnordfjord · 2017-06-24 12:23 If they have trouble using IRC at all, setting up your own server won't help. What can't they do? Connect to a major IRC network? Join a channel? To get started you could make them use a web-based IRC client. E.g. tell them to go to https://kiwiirc.com/client and enter whatever channel name you chose (and make sure they choose the same thing under "Server and network" -- freenode is the default option). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dagreatnate1 · 2017-07-11 22:22 Hey, if you still need help, DM me.
