IRC Coding for Dummies? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gul_dukat4president · 2017-06-08 20:54 Hello, I have no idea what I'm doing, but sure am hoping this is the right place. My pie in the sky dream is this, I want to set up a private server for IRC, as well as create a bot for rolling and a script for logging. I know it's possible as I've played in a few games where people have set such things up, but I have no idea how to even start to do it myself. I am not a techy person, but I love to learn and to be self- sufficient. Is this something that I could even hope to accomplish, having no prior programming experience? If not, are there other recommendations or possibilities available to me? Also, do I need to buy a server, or can I rent server space somewhere? I live in a shoe-box apartment in the middle of a downtown area and I don't know if keeping a server here would be a good idea. Thank you to any and all that took the time to read this! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FevLover · 2017-06-08 23:06 rent is the best option here. you can even rent a VPS if this private network gonna be for you and your friends. bigger if you gonna make this network global. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gul_dukat4president · 2017-06-08 23:38 Gonna sound super ignorant, but what is VPS? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Daniel_Oaks · 2017-06-09 02:12 Virtual Private Server. Essentially you head to a VPS Provider and rent a server for $X per month (usually it's decently cheap, and it's better if they specifically mention IRC somewhere). Once you have that, you can install a private server on it and start playing around! *edit:* I will note, if you're mostly looking to play with bots and scripts, it could also be good to test them on public networks. Usually what I do is have an IRC server on my local computer to do my initial testing with, and then once I'm pretty sure it won't spam things like crazy I can test it on live networks (most are alright with bots, so long as they're not malicious and don't negatively affect the server/network). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gul_dukat4president · 2017-06-09 02:40 Thank you! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rubinlinux · 2017-06-09 06:23 Sorry to be thus guy, but ruining an IRC network is a LOT of work. Instead, I think you should register a private channel on an existing IRC network, and connect your bot there. I run an IRC network of 5 nodes (but only 200 people) and I never have to spend much time on it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gul_dukat4president · 2017-06-09 16:54 I hear you, I remember how much work it was for an old pal of mine, but I just have never liked public servers. ;( ty for the reality check tho! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FevLover · 2017-06-25 16:53 VPS = Virtual Private Server / Part of bigger server
