Advice on hardware/networking for running an IRCd? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- austindkelly · 2017-05-25 02:16 Just looking for some general advice for what an IRCd server can/should be running on hardware wise. I know IRCd itself does not require much system wise for a small network. But there are requirements like being on a stable network. I was thinking of something like a soyoustart dedi or kimsurfi to get things going. for what its worth, i do have knowledge in setting up an IRCd software and linux. This is more of a spec & hardware networking question. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rubinlinux · 2017-05-25 03:41 Though it's getting better, it is still surprising what hosting providers cannot maintain tcp connections for long periods. Linode is my go-to. AWS works fine. Its really hit or miss and we do testing before keeping one. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TwiztedZero · 2017-05-25 03:43 Don't attempt to run an IRCd on your home network. You're better off using a remote colocation host that has hardware and security capable of sustaining a proper IRCd. Hunt around, they're out there. Might cost as little as $15 a month. You'd need to secure your own domains and the usual as you would for a website. It's not that daunting, just be aware most hosts won't do IRC hosting, so there are Hosts out there that do specifically. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TheCronus89 · 2017-05-25 04:25 Anything really will run an IRCd, as little as 256MB of ram. For reliability and stability I'd say skip soyoustart or kimsufi and try [RamNode](https://clientarea.ramnode.com/aff.php?aff=2258) Go with their KVM Line, and you can't lose. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- austindkelly · 2017-05-25 04:49 does ramnode allow ircd? as most VPS providers do not. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- austindkelly · 2017-05-25 04:50 > It's not that daunting, just be aware most hosts won't do IRC hosting, so there are Hosts out there that do specifically. this is kind of why im asking, as in which providers do support "IRCd" in those terms. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TheCronus89 · 2017-05-25 05:15 Yes they do. I run my IRC network on ramnodes ---------------------------------------------------------------------- unobtain · 2017-05-25 19:26 I've had good luck with DigitalOcean running IRCd's. Been running an IRCd and website on a $5 droplet for about 6 months now with no problems. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Saber_UK · 2017-05-25 19:29 You don't really need a ton of resources. I used to run an InspIRCd instance on a server with 64MB of memory and it ran very smoothly. I'd recommend you avoid anything involving OpenVZ though as IRC servers run terribly on it as you are reliant on the provider to install NTP on the Hardware Node. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- aguyonredditishere · 2017-05-29 03:25 Yeah until you get dos'ed and get a $10,000 bill for bogus bandwidth! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- unobtain · 2017-05-29 17:25 Never met anybody that's had a bad experience like that before. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- aguyonredditishere · 2017-05-29 17:53 You obviously don't have experience with IRC servers. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- unobtain · 2017-05-29 18:52 I have about a year and 4 months worth of experience with running unreal servers. DigitalOcean never gave me one problem the last six months about hosting an IRCd on a $5 droplet, granted it's a very small network (about 10-20 different people in the main room at any given time). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- aguyonredditishere · 2017-05-29 19:54 And what channel topics? Anything of a political nature is likely to get ddosed. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- unobtain · 2017-05-29 20:38 We do have one political channel, it's not very active though. Using DO doesn't make an IRC server anymore susceptible to a DoS attack than hosting an IRCd on any other VPS provider, a network is only as safe from DoS attacks as the measures that are implemented to limit them. Also, where exactly did you get that $10,000 figure from anyways? From what I could find, the most DO has ever done in response to a major DDoS attack on a droplet is shut it down. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- aguyonredditishere · 2017-05-29 20:41 Just a random number. But ddos can cause huge amounts of traffic. How much bandwidth does your ircd server use in a typical month? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- unobtain · 2017-05-29 22:36 Of course it causes excess traffic, whole point of a DDoS attack is to overload a server with traffic so that it becomes inaccessible. We average about 50-100MB/month including our site and our matrix server. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- aguyonredditishere · 2017-05-30 00:59 Thats fine as long as you don't get ddosed!
