Looking to verify that I understand the IRCd response patterns. reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- RollingGoron · 2017-04-16 22:13 I'm attempting to build a IRC Message parsing class and I want too ensure that I understand whats going on. Here are some examples and what I think is the pattern. `:card.freenode.net 376 RollingG :End of /MOTD command.` `:card.freenode.net` = prefix `376` = ?? `RollingG` = NickName `:End of /MOTD command.` = Message contents Response from `JOIN` command. `:Skater!~BobSacama@ip72-222-201-153.ph.ph.cox.net JOIN ##namespace` `:RollingG!~BobSacama@ip555-222-201-153.cox.net` = Prefix `JOIN` = Command verification `##namespace` = Chat room I was forwarded to Response from fetching NickNames from Channel `:card.freenode.net 353 RollingG @ ##namespace :RollingG ericmathison matrix12_ alexandre9099 rednerrus Eldred speeder39_ speeder39__ Cohedrin BlockyNander \\Mr_C\\ teurastaja niee matrix1233 node9 KnownSyntax dosty filadome Blupon ranger81 marloi dec k0nichiwa dogui Sterl clynamen fujisan JackTho m8 Budd KingGregoryXVIII MINIMAN10000 whazda Jarlaxle kd0t rudgan BluesInTheNet betelgeuse28 Guest44293 bambu DonDiegoGarcia netheranthem drkwolf knicklux LoopHoldYoaBrown acalycine lankanmon fluter Cube` `:card.freenode.net` = Prefix `353` = ?? `RollingG` = NickName `@` = ?? `##namespace` = Channel I am joined to `:RollingG ericmathison matrix12_ alexandre9099 ...` = Users in channel Am I somewhat close? Why are the prefixes different for each response? Responses seem to differ based on IRC network and command. How do you account these? Is there some consistency/guide I could follow? Thanks! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CannedDeath · 2017-04-17 00:46 Section 2.3 of [RFC 1459]( https://www.rfc-editor.org/rfc/rfc1459.txt) describes what the format of IRC messages is. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Saber_UK · 2017-04-27 22:12 This is outdated. If you want to use any modern features you'll need IRCv3 message tag support as well. http://ircv3.net/specs/core/message-tags-3.2.html ---------------------------------------------------------------------- XavierNite · 2017-05-10 00:25 `:` = prefix `card.freenode.net` = server `376` = numeric (this one in particular is End of MOTD) `RollingG` = nickname `:` separator so that message can be parsed easily `End of /MOTD command` = message Check /u/CannedDeath & /u/Saber_UK's comments for more info on understanding the protocol though.
