Hey me again, is it possible to talk cross networks? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- officialwitness · 2017-03-27 20:12 Hey! Let's say I have a channel regarding a subject on quakenet and another one on freenode, both with several amounts of users doing their stuff. Is it possible with some sort of bot, to send all these messages cross network. So you can chat with eachother in the "same" channel on two different networks? best regards, Officialwitness ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Laogeodritt · 2017-03-27 20:16 In summary: no, not seamlessly. > Is it possible with some sort of bot, to send all these messages cross network. So you can chat with eachother in the "same" channel on two different networks? You can write a similar bot to what you described, but not with exactly that user experience. Cross-network messages will appear to be spoken by the bot, with the bot responsible for mentioning who said what. Userlist/tab completion, etc., won't reflect the other network's channel. Also be absolutely sure this is clear to the users—at least in the communities I've been in, sharing logs secretly (to people outside the channel) is disrespectful and taboo. If you operate both networks and connect the servers together, at that point you're merging two networks into one, so even if you did operate them that's not "cross-network" anymore. You could (not should) write a programme that actually connects multiple IRC connections to each network to simulate each user, but a) that looks suspicious and many networks will kill the bot for making too many connections; b) you may end up using nicknames already registered and appear to be impersonating existing users on another network; c) you may not be able to use a nickname if it's already in use; d) you may lock someone out of their normal nickname. Bad idea all around. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cusco · 2017-03-27 22:26 Actually I've seen back in the day lots of channels doing this with eggdrop. I think it shared the partyline.. it should be one of the most used tcl scripts for eggdrop. Basically a bot on each network repeats whatever someone says on the other side prepending the nick name Very common ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cusco · 2017-03-27 22:27 You just need one nick and one bot to mirror the channel talk. Not several.. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Laogeodritt · 2017-03-28 00:07 See the user-experience remarks two paragraphs above that. That's why I brought the multi-user thing up, because that might be a natural logical progression to the "sender of mirrored messages is the bot nick only" problem. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Barry_Scotts_Cat · 2017-03-28 15:42 You can get a bot to relay messages It's shit though and is really messy. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kellyzdude · 2017-03-28 18:13 > If you operate both networks and connect the servers together, at that point you're merging two networks into one, so even if you did operate them that's not "cross-network" anymore. Once upon a time was a project (since abandoned, I believe) called [Janus](https://www.irc.wiki/Janus) that would connect to multiple networks running different IRCds and do exactly this. Users that duplicated across networks would be suffixed as "kellyzdude/Reddit" and "kellyzdude/Freenode", the users would be presented as "real" channel members, and there was even an option for a user-type client that would join networks (like Freenode) that weren't willing to allow the server-type connection. Channels could choose to opt-in to their own bridges if so desired. It worked relatively well, but was not without its drawbacks or quirks. I feel like there was something that came along and did the same thing a little better, but I can't think what it was called, if it even existed. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cusco · 2017-03-29 07:53 Ok, cool ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MuffinMedic · 2017-03-29 20:15 Look into existing IRC bots. Some, such as [CloudBot](https://github.com/CloudBotIRC/CloudBot), have existing plugins for retrieving and displaying various sports statistics.
