Problems Connecting reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cloud1494 · 2017-02-25 23:09 I've been trying to connect to IRC for a few days and haven't gotten anywhere with it. I'm on a Mac and tried with 3 different clients, Adium, Colloquy, and XChat Azure, all to no avail. It just doesn't seem to be reaching any servers. I'm in South Korea trying to get into EFNet but I've tried other networks too. Is there a country ban on South Korea or something? Perhaps there's something wrong in my settings? Here's the connection log: * Looking up irc.lightning.net * Connecting to irc.lightning.net (0.0.5.204) port 6667... * Connection failed. Error: Operation timed out Cycling to next server in EFnet... * Disconnected (). * Looking up irc.mindspring.com * Connecting to irc.mindspring.com (0.0.5.214) port 6667... * Connection failed. Try irc.efnet.org, as I believe that is an actively-maintained round robin of a bunch of servers. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cloud1494 · 2017-02-26 11:09 Nope, those are the IPs that came up in the log. That was the XChat Azure log. The other clients don't show a log. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cloud1494 · 2017-02-26 11:10 nslookup irc.easynews.com Server: 192.168.1.1 Address: 192.168.1.1#53 Non-authoritative answer: Name: irc.easynews.com Address: 0.0.0.21 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cloud1494 · 2017-02-26 11:13 nslookup irc.efnet.org returns: nslookup irc.efnet.org Server: 192.168.1.1 Address: 192.168.1.1#53 Non-authoritative answer: Name: irc.efnet.org Address: 0.0.0.30 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cloud1494 · 2017-02-26 11:24 I can't even ping irc.easynews.com, even after changing my DNS. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2017-02-26 12:43 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cloud1494 · 2017-02-26 12:58 It looks like SK is weird. I just connected to VPN in the states and IRC connected just fine this time. Apparently it's not just China that has restrictions on this sort of thing... I didn't want to have to connect to my VPN for IRC so hopefully I can figure something else out. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cloud1494 · 2017-02-26 13:26 I replied to damiankw up there, looks like something's not right here in SK. Either my ISP is blocking the IRC protocol/DNS names/ports, or the government here is. I connected to a VPN in the states and was able to use IRC just fine that way. It just sucks that I have to use a VPN. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- damiankw · 2017-02-26 13:29 Try getting DNS from google: nslookup irc.easynews.com 8.8.8.8 Once you have one of the IP addresses, connect to that directly and see how you go. I dont know how SK works with public DNS though ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2017-02-26 20:19 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2017-03-04 07:19 [removed] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2017-03-04 11:38 [removed]
