What do you use IRC for?
reddit / irc

I just discovered IRC and be trying to figure out the math behind it,
but I feel like I merely scratched the tip of the iceberg.

I've used it to get a hold of some ebooks, but was wandering what
people use (or used) it for, in broad terms.

Mere chatting? File sharing?

Chatting, in appropriate #channels, either on interest, topic, or game
related. Used to love #redheads back in the day. And playing idlerpg
and it's variants. Been using IRC since '96. FSM I'm old.

It's one of the best places to get answers for tech problems. #linux
#ubuntu and various programming languages have consistently over 1000
users online at any time. Also some open source programs.

This is the main answer for anything on freenode. Q & A with people
actively involved in software projects or very knowledgeable about
programming, algorithms, maths, web development and security.

A botnet is a group of computers controlled by a hacker typically,
used most commonly to launch DDos attacks.
