How many users can a IRC channel fit? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Mike101111101010 · 2017-02-18 16:12 If you're going to say it depends on the server, then how about a popular one like freenode? Do they care if the people that use it are using it for business purposes? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MuffinMedic · 2017-02-18 16:15 > then how about a popular one like freenode? freenode's top channels have > 2000 users. There's no technical limit, although some networks may decide to configure channel size limits - I haven't seen this myself. > Do they care if the people that use it are using it for business purposes? Do **not** do this. While some networks may allow it, IRC is inherently insecure in many ways. If you need a chat for business purposes, talk to your IT department for setting up a proper, secure live chat system. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Mike101111101010 · 2017-02-18 17:13 Great answer! Thank you! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rubinlinux · 2017-02-18 17:59 Lots of businesses use irc channels. It is no less secure than any other social media. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- spling44 · 2017-02-18 19:07 I think the important thing to remember is that IRC over SSL is only secure if every client in the channel is using SSL. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ecnahc515 · 2017-02-18 20:47 And if every relay server is using SSL too, which isn't the case on some networks, since pretty much no one does client SSL. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rubinlinux · 2017-02-19 00:05 You wouldn't use it to share passwords or anything. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Saber_UK · 2017-02-19 00:21 > since pretty much no one does client SSL. [citation needed] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Saber_UK · 2017-02-19 00:22 Thats true for any form of communication. Depending on your IRCd you may also have channel modes which can help mitigate this by denying access for non-TLS clients. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Saber_UK · 2017-02-19 00:23 I know that InspIRCd is used by at least one company which has had up to 100k clients on a single server. Thats not something I would recommend for redundancy reasons but its perfectly capable. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Saber_UK · 2017-02-19 00:25 Theres no reason why you could not use a private IRC server for business use and in fact there are many businesses doing this already. If you control your own server you can enforce secure practises by requiring TLS support. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MuffinMedic · 2017-02-19 00:28 A private IRC server, of course. The question was geared toward existing public networks. If the user would like to implement a private chat for business, they should discuss the idea with IT, including the possible use of a self-hosted and secure IRC server. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- KillerWillard · 2017-02-19 19:39 That was a pretty good answer
