Did You Trade MP3s on IRC in the mid to late 90s? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- systemshockdoc · 2017-02-17 03:01 hi /irc! Apologies if this is too promotional / irrelevant to most people. If so, mods, feel free to lock this. My name is Jed and I make videos. Currently I'm working on an hour- long documentary for Bloomberg detailing how the mp3 disrupted the music industry, pushing it to evolve into a free-release and streaming economic system, ultimately challenging the popular conception of music's monetary value. It's a complex story with a lot of moving parts. I've been fortunate enough to travel to Germany to speak with the inventor of the mp3, as well as film many artists and industry folks who helped affect the changes (or were directly affected by the changes) that resulted in a push toward the industry we know today. As many of you know, before Napster many fans traded mp3s via FTP sites on IRC chat channels. I'm looking for a few characters who can speak on camera about the trading, ripping, and sharing of mp3s on IRC in the mid 1990s. Ideally you are still involved in the music scene in some way currently, if even just a fan. If this could be you or someone you know, please hit me up on here or write to jrosenberg67 AT bloomberg DOT net Thank you! You may have luck there as well. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kyleyankan · 2017-02-17 11:30 fserves are where most of my music and porn came from ---------------------------------------------------------------------- IlluminatiEnrollment · 2017-02-17 12:18 Nice try, RIAA ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Sarenord · 2017-02-17 14:21 I wasn't alive during the 90s but I would love to watch the final product of your project! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- systemshockdoc · 2017-02-17 14:32 Thanks! Happy to make a post on this sub when it's released online. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kelso_boy · 2017-02-17 16:02 I God yeah. I remember I had a few .wav filed that I would listen to. My friend on irc wanted to send me an MP3 file. Fastball-The Way. I reluctantly accepted the file and downloaded WinAmp. I was blown away. It was like listening to a cd. After that I'd make a list of song to download after I went to bed at night. Good times. I still have all my mp3's on a flash drive and use them to this day. I like seeing the date in the file. Brings back memories. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ERIFNOMI · 2017-02-17 18:27 Jesus I'm getting old... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- habys · 2017-02-17 18:30 !list ---------------------------------------------------------------------- JankyDoodle · 2017-02-17 19:26 This is only partially-relevant, but as another pointed out, file- sharing on IRC is alive and well. There are plenty of active DCC search engines out there if you look hard enough. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- systemshockdoc · 2017-02-17 20:51 Thanks Clintcar! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gatewayy · 2017-02-18 02:44 That takes me back, I preferred ITC trading to isenet in the 90s. Though I tend to stick to private trackers theses days. I never stopped using IRC though. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Daveeatworld · 2017-05-05 15:38 Tell me about it....
