Tips for growing a server? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- JankyDoodle · 2017-02-16 06:24 I'm currently running a small unrealIRCD server on a shared vps. I can't seem to find any literature out there on the web on how to grow it, though. It's currently runs about 6-10 active users. It is for a particular video game series, so it's niche to begin with. Perhaps my google-fu is poor. Any advice or links? Thanks. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- XavierNite · 2017-02-16 15:09 I actually provide a service that aims to do just that. Go ahead and submit your network to the [index](https://irc-source.com/new-network) so people can discover your network and it's channels through search. The crawler bot will scan for updates once an hour and submit your channel list and what not into the search results. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- aperson · 2017-02-17 01:00 I did a channel search to see how high up one of my favorite channels was (#minecraft on freenode). I went through five or six pages and didn't see it. What? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- noeatnosleep · 2017-02-23 14:07 Better question: Why do you want to grow a server instead of joining an existing one that has tons of users? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- JankyDoodle · 2017-02-24 17:37 Well, that might seem like a better question given that I didn't give you all of the information. The server specifically caters to a mostly dead video game series. I guess my real question was how to most effectively put it out there to people who are involved, since I don't know everyone in that specific community. Servers like Quakenet have odd permissions. Specifically, these: "Clones Creating excessive clones from your connection, or by using proxies, is forbidden. If you need to run more than 5 clients on your connection you need to acquire a trust, or your clients will get G-lined. Note that the customers of a few ISPs are only allowed to run 2 simultaneous connections." We have an IRC weblink on one of our forums that opens new connections on the same IP address. "Idlebots Using bots or clones with no real functionality to artificially boost channel averages is forbidden." That's very vague, and we had a hard time registering our bots in the server because of this, given that their only functionality is to display how many current players are online. "Multiplayer cheats Distributing or requesting cheats to multiplayer games is forbidden." "Spreading of malicious code Coding and spreading of trojans/viruses/worms is forbidden." Like I said, the series is mostly dead; however, some of its continued life is due to HUD/Gamemode mods, both of which are considered to be "hacks" and "cheats." ---------------------------------------------------------------------- noeatnosleep · 2017-02-24 17:40 Great response!
