There is an IRC channel which I wish to monitor without keeping my
system "on". Is there a way to do this ?

Use a bouncer service or irccloud.

znc ftw ;) its awesome :) ... you can run it on a rpi ... plus lots of
cool plugins for analysing logs etc http://wiki.znc.in/ZNC

You could just run Weechat or Irssi on a VPS, or use ShroudBNC with a
logging script.
