[ZNC] Is there a way to keep ZNC channels permanently detached? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- irregular_regular · 2017-01-16 23:36 I'd like znc to be constantly recording the messages in a channel but the issue is when I join a channel to have the messages played back to me, the channel is automatically attached again. Is there a way to prevent this from happening or is there a way to automatically detach again? (not sure if it will help but my irc client is ERC inside Emacs) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MuffinMedic · 2017-01-16 23:39 > when I join a channel to have the messages played back to me, the channel is automatically attached again This is the correct behavior. Rejoining a channel, by definition, attaches you to it. > is there a way to automatically detach again No. Detach when? On client disconnect? After a time period? etc... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- irregular_regular · 2017-01-16 23:42 I'd want to detach immediately so when I leave the channel again, ZNC will record messages again. Otherwise everytime I join a channel I need to immediately type /znc detach * or else when I leave, the messages aren't recorded anymore. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MuffinMedic · 2017-01-16 23:47 > I'd want to detach immediately so when I leave the channel again, ZNC will record messages again. There are really only 2 relevant use-cases here that ZNC supports out of the box: (1) You are attached to a channel and your client receives any content sent to is, as is normally done with any client-server model or (2) You are detached and ZNC will play back from the buffer when you reattach. Detaching simply so ZNC can playback buffered content on reattaching that your client would be receiving if attached anyways doesn't really make sense from a use-case point of view. There are different modules to interface with the buffer in a variety of ways, but the basic principle is the same. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- irregular_regular · 2017-01-16 23:54 Right. I was just hoping that for the use case of when you're a frequent visitor / leaver of a channel, there might be a way to keep the channel detached as it's cumbersome to detach it on every visit. Probably a different approach is needed here than what ZNC can provide though. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MuffinMedic · 2017-01-16 23:58 It's possible - you could write a module to detach certain channels on client disconnect, it's just not supported out of the box. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- stonedparadox · 2017-01-17 12:02 What exactly is channel detach.. Is it like parting a chan when you disconnect from znc /close Irc client ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MuffinMedic · 2017-01-17 15:11 Detached parts you from the channel client side but keeps you joined ZNC side. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- stonedparadox · 2017-01-17 15:28 So you basically part the chan... Whats the point of that?.. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MuffinMedic · 2017-01-17 15:37 You stay joined from ZNC, so people can still PM you from the channel, ping you (optional autoattach), keep logs, etc... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- stonedparadox · 2017-01-17 16:30 You've just reminded me of a dude who has znc but parts chan when going to bed and I always thought that's strange..not anymore. Listen mate you've been super nice and helpful. Cheers ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2017-01-31 18:22 [removed]
