Invalid Oper credentials? - Inspircd reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dragndon · 2017-01-12 02:07 So I decided to take a stab at setting up an IRC server. Created a Linux Mint VM, installed Inspircd and it runs. Connected to it just fine. Just can't get Oper credentials. I checked to make sure that the name and password are correct multiple times and yet still refuses to work. Changed the password and still nothing. Inspircd 2.0.20-5build2 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mircscript · 2017-01-12 02:09 You'll need to post an example of the oper config block in your config file, and the error message you get when you try to oper for anyong to be able to help you. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dragndon · 2017-01-12 02:13 To be honest, it's bone stock setup, only changed the name/password in the default conf. inspircd.conf Error message: "Invalid oper credentials" That's it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MuffinMedic · 2017-01-12 02:59 > Inspircd 2.0.20-5build2 InspIRCd is at 2.0.23 - should upgrade > password="password" Never store passwords in plaintext. Use a hash. > host="*@localhost" Are you connecting to the machine via localhost / 127.0.0.1? If not, you won't be able to oper up. Assuming all of this has been done correctly, have you restarted or had someone rehash the configs? The configs are not automatically updated in InspIRCd when changed. Did you include the oper config file in your `inspircd.conf` if it's in a separate file? If after you have made all the above changes and it still doesn't work, please post your **exact** configs for `inspircd.conf` and wherever your oper config is. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElementalAlchemist · 2017-01-12 03:28 If you look at the logs, you should see the failed oper somewhere in there. That should have something more specific, like BADUSER, BADPASS, or BADHOST, or something like that. From there you should be able to see the specific thing that was wrong. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dragndon · 2017-01-12 03:57 Ah, that helps "the following fields do not match: hosts" Hmm, not to figure out how to correct this. This test is all done locally on the same machine using irssi as a client. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dragndon · 2017-01-12 04:13 > InspIRCd is at 2.0.23 - should upgrade That is the latest build available for Linux Mint 18 it seems. apt- get upgrade shows 0 updates available. >Keep in mind the names are case sensitive Got that already. >Never store passwords in plaintext. Use a hash. Will learn that once I get the basics working. This setup is not likely ever to see public facing functionality. Just something for me to learn on. > Are you connecting to the machine via localhost / 127.0.0.1? If not, you won't be able to oper up. Yes I am. I've tried both actually, just to see if there was a difference because once I was reminded of log files (and for some reason, I've yet to remember this...) I saw "the following fields do not match: hosts" in there. >Assuming all of this has been done correctly, have you restarted or had someone rehash the configs? After any changes, I restarted the daemon. >The configs are not automatically updated in InspIRCd when changed. Did you include the oper config file in your inspircd.conf if it's in a separate file? It's not a separate file but contained within the inspircd.conf file I have essentially been following [these directions](https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/how-to- set-up-an-irc-server-on-ubuntu-14-04-with-inspircd-2-0-and-shalture). As the config file is on a different machine, it's rather difficult to post it here. Will do that when I'm not ready to fall asleep at the keyboard....after coffee in the morning :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MuffinMedic · 2017-01-12 05:19 > That is the latest build available for Linux Mint 18 it seems. apt- get upgrade shows 0 updates available. Compile and install from source. > I saw "the following fields do not match: hosts" in there. Try changing `*@localhost` to `*@127.0.0.1` ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mircscript · 2017-01-12 12:46 Change: > host="*@localhost" To: > host="\*@\*" in your oper block and it should work (after you've rehashed/restarted the server) Once you've confirmed it works, you could then play around with restricting which host can you use your oper block if you want. If you /whois yourself, you should see something like this: > 06:42 -!- MyNick [myuser@probably.a.cloaked.host.of.some.kind] > 06:42 -!- ircname : myname > 06:42 -!- hostname : myuser@myrealhost myrealip > 06:42 -!- server : myserver > 06:42 -!- modes : +iwx > 06:42 -!- idle : 0 days 0 hours 0 mins 11 secs [signon: Thu Jan 12 06:42:23 2017] > 06:42 -!- End of WHOIS The third line, hostname, is the one you should base your host="" setting off of. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dragndon · 2017-01-12 15:42 > host="*@*" This did it. Thanks! Now onto next stages :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dragndon · 2017-01-12 15:43 > Compile and install from source. That will be something to do for sure. > host="*@*" Seems to work now. Thanks for your suggestions. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mircscript · 2017-01-12 15:51 You're welcome! Good luck. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2017-01-17 06:00 [removed] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jawshthedark · 2017-01-19 16:44 If your using default oper conf. Then the hostmask is set to local host. If your connecting to the ircd via the VM you should be able to oper. But if you connect outside of the vm your hostmask won't match ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dragndon · 2017-01-19 18:01 Good info, thanks.
