Is there a benefit to using ZNC on my VPS or just having weechat running on it all the time? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lownin · 2016-12-16 04:36 I may have a fundamental misunderstanding on how these pieces fit together. I see that some people use ZNC as an intermediary between their IRC client and IRC servers, to maintain a presence when offline and record buffers. Why would I do that instead of just keeping Weechat running in a tmux session that I connect to when I'm online? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- doaks-ltm · 2016-12-16 04:38 Having ZNC running also lets you connect other clients to it (for instance, I connect with weechat, some iOS clients, etc). I tend to prefer having weechat running locally over ssh as well, just because it feels more responsive (particularly on slow connections, which happens a fair bit). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lownin · 2016-12-16 04:47 Do I get buffer persistence with ZNC? For instance, if I connect with Hexchat and receive a chat buffer and then 20 minute's later I connect with Limechat from another computer, is there a gap in my buffer, or am I re-sent what was sent to Hexchat earlier? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MuffinMedic · 2016-12-16 05:39 You can set ZNC up to handle buffers in several different ways - always retain, auto clear on first client connect, clear on message, client specific buffers, etc... It's very customizable. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- doaks-ltm · 2016-12-16 08:10 Pretty much as Muffin says. By default I think it always sends you the last like 20-50 lines of text in each chan, and always sends you the PMs you've missed. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Nicd · 2016-12-16 11:55 WeeChat also has an IRC proxy so you can connect any IRC client to it. But in addition it has its custom protocol that has more features. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lownin · 2016-12-16 17:32 What are the pros and cons to using WeeChat vs ZNC as an IRC proxy? Is it basically the same? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kihashi · 2016-12-16 17:32 I have mine set up to send me a pushover push notification if my name gets highlighted after not being active for over 3 minutes. Means that people can get a hold of me even when I'm not actively looking. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Nicd · 2016-12-16 17:48 I haven't used ZNC or the WeeChat IRC proxy myself. But I believe the IRC proxy in WeeChat works like a normal bouncer. No idea if it has backlog support though. I use weechat-android to connect to my running WeeChat instance when I'm on mobile. Sometimes also glowing-bear (it's a web UI). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lownin · 2016-12-16 18:05 Where do you get the push notification? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kihashi · 2016-12-16 18:54 I get it on my phone. I use [Pushover](https://pushover.net/) and a [ZNC Pushover plugin](https://github.com/jreese/znc-push) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- notoriousOIT · 2016-12-18 10:29 It is entirely you preference. I prefer to just use SSH + screen + irssi. But I know people that only use ZNC. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MattRob1nson · 2016-12-23 17:06 You can change the amount of lines in the buffer to any integer. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2016-12-31 02:09 [removed]
