What server should I use to message my friends? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- flyingbacon · 2016-12-06 04:26 So I need a server that me and my friends can log onto and get on an obscure channel, just for us. It needs to be a server that has no logon stuff (like freenode does). Thanks ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rdv_ · 2016-12-06 04:35 Try www.matrix.org Decentralized, has private keys etc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MuffinMedic · 2016-12-06 04:37 Most IRC networks do not require registration, but simply offer it as a way for users to protect their usernames and various access /permissions to channels. freenode, Snoonet, Esper, etc... are all large IRC networks that offer it as an optional service. If, for some reason, you need an IRC network that doesn't offer any services, then Efnet is your best bet, but keep in mind this has drawbacks in terms of being able to retain control over your channel. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- notoriousOIT · 2016-12-06 06:54 Pretty sure he's not asking for this ---------------------------------------------------------------------- notoriousOIT · 2016-12-06 06:55 Freeride will work just fine for you. Just pick a chan and connect. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rdv_ · 2016-12-06 06:56 Pretty sure he doesn't even know what he's asking for. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- notoriousOIT · 2016-12-06 08:14 Right, so why put him on the wrong path? He will be fine with connecting to freeride and joining any empty channel. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rkos · 2016-12-06 12:22 Why not set up your own [IRC daemon](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_IRC_daemons)? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- stokedcrf · 2016-12-06 14:39 All servers will allow you to put keys and make your channel invisible. If you're asking here how do set this stuff up, chances are figuring out how to host your own server and make it secure etc is going to be over your head anyways. I don't mean this in a bad way, I'm just saying it seems like a somewhat inexperienced question.
