Noob Question; sorry.. reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mishasam89 · 2016-11-18 10:28 Hi everyone. I recently started using irc, and wanted to know how are such great download speeds possible from XDCC bots? I mean, since I'm not paying for the service, I was curious are these bots running on some T3 line on a corporate server somewhere, or is the individual internet speed of each user/his bot that fast?? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nath_ · 2016-11-18 13:21 I don't quite get it. What bots? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Strm433334 · 2016-11-18 13:32 Question is unclear. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Monkespank · 2016-11-18 15:27 I assume this is referring to XDCC bots like you would find on http://ixirc.com. Im guessing the speed depends on the bot and how many users are downloading from it. Anything beyond that I have no idea. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mishasam89 · 2016-11-18 17:47 yes, that's what i thought as well, but sometimes i get like 7MB/s speeds, and I'm thinking who would host these types of upload speeds for free? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AltReality · 2016-11-18 18:30 They are most likely running on VPS systems which usually have a pretty decent internet connection...possibly even hosted in other countries that have much better/faster internet than the US. Check out OVH or DigitalOcean....check out the connectivity/networking options on their VPS systems. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mishasam89 · 2016-11-18 18:39 thanks ---------------------------------------------------------------------- stokedcrf · 2016-11-23 16:36 Here in Canada we have gigabit Internet in our homes... (well some of us do anyways). Of course, my upload speeds are not gigabit, but speeds are getting pretty fast now. It doesn't take much for us share files with pretty impressive speeds. Many Irc clients have xdcc options built in... (or should I say scripts that do) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Acyt3k · 2016-12-04 21:38 This is a pretty late response, but a lot of people host and help distribute files solely because they believe they should be freely available.
