New to IRC reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MINDustry · 2016-09-10 15:31 I'm totally new to IRC and need help connecting to the freenode network. Everytime I try to connect with my usernames (SASL+Password) it fails to connect. Should I buy mIRC or should I try to work around this problem with Hexchat? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- evilyou · 2016-09-10 15:48 Can you paste the error it gives you here? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mollested_skittles · 2016-09-10 19:13 Google webchat freenode and use the web interface to connect. Then type /join #help try also /join #English also for help there. Usually hexchat is good enough. You don't need SSL to connect to freenode. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Saber_UK · 2016-09-10 19:20 > You don't need SSL to connect to freenode. You generally should use secure connections unless you absolutely can not for some reason. We are working on [an extension](http://ircv3.net/specs/core/sts-3.3.html) to the IRC protocol to make it so clients can automatically upgrade from plaintext to TLS if the server supports it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MINDustry · 2016-09-10 20:00 What if I just want to use the client? Should I post my error message? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mollested_skittles · 2016-09-10 20:04 sure ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TingPing · 2016-09-10 20:21 If SASL is failing your username or password is simply wrong (or services are down, but they are fine here). HexChat re-uses the **username** field as SASL username so it must be a nick you own. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MINDustry · 2016-09-11 02:28 When trying to connect to irc.freenode.net/+6697 with NickServ + Password as the login method I get "Mindoomer is not a registered nickname". When I use SASL I get, "SASL Authentication Failed/Aborted. You may not re-register" Any idea of the issue? Maybe you can help me over Skype or something. I really want to start using this IRC client. I doubt paying for a new one will fix the issue. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MINDustry · 2016-09-11 02:30 So what do I do? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MINDustry · 2016-09-11 02:30 When trying to connect to irc.freenode.net/+6697 with NickServ + Password as the login method I get "Mindoomer is not a registered nickname". It's probably failing because the nick isn't registered, can you connect without using SASL? If all else fails maybe try the web interface and register your nick from there, then connect from your client using SASL? Definitely don't pay for a new client, that's probably not the issue and there are a lot of good free ones, I'm partial to HexChat but use whatever you're comfortable with. edit: Is the nickname registered *and* verified? (Nickserv will send you an email) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mollested_skittles · 2016-09-11 08:17 First join without SSL then register your nickname using the freenode FAQ. After that you will be able to login. I am still on my phone but in 10h tonight I'll get on my laptop to help you if you are still having problems. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TingPing · 2016-09-11 12:04 You can probably connect with the [webchat](http://webchat.freenode.net/) and register your nick: https://freenode.net/kb/answer/registration ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MINDustry · 2016-09-11 18:13 I'll just wait for you. 10 tonight? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MINDustry · 2016-09-12 02:35 Would anybody be able to help me via Skype or something? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- crokuz · 2016-10-15 21:29 You need to REGISTER a nickname. type this: /msg nickserv register the bot will then tell you if it suceeded or that name is already taken. or if it needs something else like an email address. just follow it's instruction. you need to actually READ. when you get the message "Mindoomer" is not a registered nickname. What does that tell you? It's not REGISTERED. so REGISTER it. :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2016-10-15 21:30 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- onebasix · 2016-10-29 00:06 Congratulations and welcome to IRC.
